If you want lessons in general drawing and painting, start with New Art Academy. Choose Pokémon Art Academy or Disney Art Academy if drawing familiar characters is the appeal; pick Colors! 3D for a more open-ended digital sketchbook. The right choice depends on whether you want instruction, a licensed theme, or room to experiment.

Choose by what you want to draw
For broad art instruction: New Art Academy
This is the most straightforward choice if you want to practise drawing and painting without committing to a character franchise. Nintendo describes introductory and advanced courses, over 30 new lessons, and a free-paint mode. Its range of simulated materials—from pencils to paints and pastels—makes it the broadest fit for trying different approaches within a guided game. Nintendo UK’s description establishes the features, though it does not independently measure how effectively players learn.

For Pokémon lessons: Pokémon Art Academy
Pick this if the subject matter is part of the fun: Nintendo describes 40 lessons that teach Pokémon illustrations step by step, plus Free Paint and Quick Sketch. More than 100 reference pictures and tools such as markers and an airbrush give you options beyond tracing a single example. Nintendo’s European listing identifies a game-card edition, which is the practical route to investigate now that the 3DS eShop no longer accepts purchases.
Keep its connected features in perspective. Nintendo Japan says internet-connected functions for Pokémon Art Academy ended on 9 April 2024, including additional sample downloads and receiving notices or data. Those launch-era functions should not be treated as available today. Nintendo Japan service notice

- Share your artistic creations Share works-in-progress or finished pieces via local wireless or your Friend List. Even create your own art lessons, and share those via the SpotPass feature.
For Disney and Pixar characters: Disney Art Academy
If you would rather draw Disney or Pixar characters, Nintendo’s 2016 announcement describes lessons covering more than 80 characters, with nine tools, Free Paint, and a magic brush. One useful practical detail is the export format: Nintendo Support says completed pictures can be saved to the SD card as JPEG files at 640 × 480 pixels. Those exported files cannot be edited with the game’s tools. Nintendo Support: saving a picture
For an open digital sketchbook: Colors! 3D
Colors! 3D is the alternative when you want painting tools without the structure of a lesson curriculum. Nintendo describes 3D paintings, local shared-canvas play, and an online gallery. The gallery and other internet-dependent functions should be considered historical features rather than guaranteed working services: Nintendo’s product page confirms the software listing, but does not establish current service status for each online function. It was sold as download software, not as a physical cartridge, and the 3DS eShop has closed to new purchases.

Why drawing on a 3DS can feel different
The 3DS has a built-in division of labour: use the lower touchscreen as a canvas while the upper screen displays a lesson or reference. In a historical interview, then-Nintendo president Satoru Iwata described the Touch Screen as something that could work as a “canvas or sketchbook,” with tutorials on the upper screen. Iwata Asks interview
That setup is appealing if you like having an example visible while you draw directly on the device. Whether the touchscreen feels enjoyable is personal; the available product descriptions do not establish how it compares with a current drawing tablet, pressure behavior, or professional art workflows. Try to handle a compatible console if you are unsure about the screen and stylus experience.

Buying and playing these games now
- Do not plan on an eShop purchase. Nintendo UK says purchases in the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops ended on 27 March 2023. Nintendo UK eShop notice
- Check for a physical edition where one was listed. Nintendo UK listed game cards for New Art Academy and Pokémon Art Academy. That establishes historical formats, not current stock; check region, language, condition, and seller terms before buying.
- Do not expect a Colors! 3D cartridge. Nintendo presented it as download software, and new purchases from the eShop are no longer available.
- Check the console and stylus condition. Drawing depends on a responsive touchscreen and a usable stylus; inspect the actual hardware rather than assuming a used system is in good condition.
- Treat online features cautiously. Service availability can differ by title and feature. Nintendo specifically documented the end of Pokémon Art Academy internet functions in 2024; do not assume launch-era online features in other games still operate without a current title-specific confirmation.
Final recommendation by player
- Choose New Art Academy for the broadest guided introduction to drawing and painting.
- Choose Pokémon Art Academy for structured lessons centered on Pokémon.
- Choose Disney Art Academy for Disney and Pixar character lessons and SD-card JPEG exports.
- Choose Colors! 3D if freeform painting matters more than guided lessons, and you can access the download edition.
