Best for a single-player animal story: Endling: Extinction is Forever
Endling: Extinction is Forever is the clearest choice if you want a contained, narrative-led adventure rather than a persistent multiplayer ecosystem. It casts you as a fox facing environmental threats while raising cubs. Steam identifies it as single-player and a survival adventure; publisher THQ Nordic’s release announcement describes it as an animal survival game and confirms its PC release.
Choose Endling for its fox protagonist and focused solo framing. The available descriptions establish the premise and mode, but do not justify assuming that it includes every familiar survival mechanic, such as crafting or a particular hunger-and-thirst system.

Best for playing as a wolf: WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition
WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition is the shortlist pick for anyone specifically looking to inhabit a wolf’s life. Its official site says the game was remade for PC and Mac and is available through Steam and itch.io. The site supports that broad description, but not a detailed claim about particular mechanics, current release status, or how biologically accurate the simulation is.
Best for multiplayer survival: The Isle
The Isle is the option for players who want a shared world rather than a self-contained story. Its Steam description calls it a gritty open-world survival horror game and notes dedicated servers and basic persistence. That makes it a different proposition from a focused solo adventure: consider it if multiplayer and an ongoing survival setting are what you want.

What to check before choosing an animal survival game
“Survival” does not mean the same thing in every game. Hunger, thirst, temperature, disease, hostile threats, exploration, foraging and crafting are common considerations across the broader PC survival genre, but a genre overview is not evidence that every animal game includes them. Use those systems as questions to check against the individual game’s current listing rather than assumptions. - Decide between solo and multiplayer: Endling is identified as single-player; The Isle describes dedicated servers and persistence.
- Pick the animal fantasy: a fox raising cubs, a wolf-oriented simulation, or a creature in a multiplayer survival-horror world.
- Match the tone and commitment: choose a contained narrative adventure or an ongoing shared sandbox.
- Verify the live PC listing: storefront availability, editions and release labels can change. Check the relevant Steam or official game page before buying.
What about Shelter 2?
Shelter 2 is a related title worth checking, but the evidence here is not enough to recommend it on specific features or confirm its current standalone PC availability. Steam’s Endling page surfaces a bundle pairing the two games; that establishes a connection between the titles, not details about Shelter 2’s mechanics or current listing.
