There is no single best skateboarding game for everyone: the right pick depends on whether you want arcade combos, demanding simulation controls, physics-driven free skating, 2D trick chains, or a classic from an earlier era. This guide focuses on games supported by the available sources rather than padding the list to reach 15; it also flags where current platform availability is not established.

Arcade scoring and combo play
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2
Choose this remaster if you want an arcade-focused skating game built around chaining tricks and chasing scores rather than recreating the full difficulty of real-world board control. Activision described it as a remaster of the original two games, with online and offline play and Create-A-Skater and Create-A-Park tools. Its announcement documents the 2020 launch platforms only, so confirm the current listing for your system before buying.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4
This is the newer option for players who want the Tony Hawk series’ arcade approach alongside cross-platform multiplayer. Xbox Wire announced its July 11, 2025 release on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PS4, and said multiplayer supports up to eight skaters across platforms. Platform and regional edition listings can change; use the linked announcement as a launch reference, not a guarantee of present availability.
Simulation and physics-driven skating
Session: Skate Sim
Session is the pick for players drawn to a more realistic, demanding style of control. TransWorld identifies its twin-stick control system and calls out real-world-inspired locations including Brooklyn Banks, FDR Park, Pier 7, and China Banks. That control emphasis makes it a different proposition from an arcade game: expect to spend more attention on how a trick is executed than on simply entering a combo.

Skater XL
Skater XL builds its control around the boarder’s feet: according to its Steam page, one thumbstick maps to each foot. That makes the game a fit for players interested in physics-driven movement and open-ended skating rather than a tightly specified arcade route. Steam also lists free skate multiplayer for up to ten players, community maps, and customization with gear from more than 30 skate brands. Check the live store page for the current platform listing and feature details.
2D trick chaining
OlliOlli World
OlliOlli World offers a clear alternative to 3D skating games: it presents skating as a colorful side-scrolling ride focused on speed and chaining tricks. It suits players who want quick, readable runs and trick combinations without the spatial demands of navigating a 3D skatepark. The cited roundup supports that style description but does not verify current platform availability.

Older games worth considering
Skate 3
Skate 3 is an Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3-era title that the cited roundup singles out for its map design and park editor. It belongs on a shortlist if you want an older 3D skating game with room to build and explore. Because the source does not confirm present-day compatibility or access, check the relevant platform’s current store or support information before planning to play.
California Games
Released in 1987, California Games is a retro sports game with a skateboarding event, rather than a modern skateboarding simulation. TransWorld says it is available on Steam, but store status can change; verify the current listing before relying on that availability.
Rank #3
Skate or Die
TransWorld includes Skate or Die among its classic skateboarding-game picks. It is a historical option for players exploring the genre’s earlier years, but the cited source does not establish a current storefront or compatible platform.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to pick the right one
- For arcade combos: start with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 or Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4.
- For deliberate, simulation-like control: compare Session: Skate Sim’s twin-stick approach with Skater XL’s foot-mapped controls.
- For 2D runs and trick chains: choose OlliOlli World.
- For a classic: look at Skate 3, California Games, or Skate or Die, but verify how you can access each one on your hardware.
- For multiplayer: the cited official sources specifically document up to eight cross-platform skaters for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 and up to ten players in Skater XL free skate multiplayer. Check the linked pages for current details.
These games are not ranked because the cited sources do not provide a common test or comparable scoring method. Platform support and storefront access are especially important for older releases, and a launch announcement or roundup is not a live availability check.
