There is no evidence-backed universal best secondary-weapon combo in Monster Hunter Wilds. The strongest choice depends on what your main weapon struggles with: reach, access to a particular monster part, status or team utility, or a different element. Treat the Seikret’s secondary-weapon slot as an option for adapting during a hunt—not a requirement to switch constantly.
How the secondary weapon works
Capcom says the Seikret lets hunters access and switch to a secondary weapon in the field without returning to base. The game has 14 returning weapon types: Great Sword, Long Sword, Sword & Shield, Dual Blades, Hammer, Hunting Horn, Lance, Gunlance, Switch Axe, Charge Blade, Insect Glaive, Light Bowgun, Heavy Bowgun and Bow. Capcom’s May 30, 2024 overview describes the mechanic and roster; it does not establish a current balance ranking.

Focus Mode gives hunters more precise control over aiming and attacks to target weak points, according to Capcom. That supports deliberate targeting, but does not make any weapon pair objectively strongest.
Choose a combo for the problem you need to solve
Compare a candidate pair on practical fit: range and access to elevated or distant targets; cutting versus blunt access to parts; status, KO or team-support utility; elemental or status flexibility; overlap in armor skills; and how comfortably you can switch between the two. A useful secondary weapon covers a gap or gives you another option, rather than duplicating your main weapon without a reason.

Need reach or access to distant targets? Add a ranged option
Great Sword plus Light Bowgun is one example of a range contrast in the independent field guide, fact-checked August 3, 2026. It may suit a hunter who wants to keep a close-range main weapon while carrying a different way to engage at range. The guide offers this as a practical example, not a measured damage or completion-time advantage.
Need access to a part your main weapon handles poorly? Pair blunt and cutting damage
Hammer plus a cutting weapon is another role-based example from that field guide. It gives you a choice of damage type when a hunt calls for different part access. Which weapon to use depends on the target and your build; the pairing is not a universal upgrade.

- Hunt giant nature-infused bests – Survive their attacks, learn from their behaviors, and use your Karakuri and your weapons in combination to cut these creatures down to size.
- Craft your hunting grounds – You are the only one in Azuma able to wield the Karakuri technology.
- Hunt in a pack, or be a lone wolf – In WILD HEARTS you can face the Kemono alone or unite with up to two friends (or other players) to stalk and hunt your prey.
- Gear up to hunt, hunt to gear up – Create your character, then gather materials from each hunt and build an array of armor and weapons.
Want status, KO or team utility? Consider Heavy Bowgun
Mobalytics’ pairing guide suggests Heavy Bowgun as a utility option, citing status ammunition, sticky-ammo KO, capture utility and Demon or Armor Ammo buffs. Those recommendations come from beta playtests, as the guide itself notes. Treat them as ideas to investigate in your current build, not guarantees about present-day effects or numerical strength. Check the live game’s Hunter’s Notes or current official documentation for specific ammo and skill behavior.
Prefer flexible support alongside a mobile weapon? Try Sword & Shield and Hunting Horn
Mobalytics presents Sword & Shield plus Hunting Horn as a role-based combination: mobility and item use alongside Hunting Horn support and KO potential. This is an example of complementary jobs, not evidence that it is the strongest multiplayer pairing. The guide’s recommendations are based on beta playtests.

Want a familiar backup with a different element or status? Carry two variants
Two weapons of the same type can preserve your familiar moveset while letting you change element or status. Both Mobalytics and the independent field guide describe this approach. It can also keep your armor-skill focus on one weapon type, though whether that is worthwhile depends on your equipment and the skills available in the live game.

Already use Hunting Horn? Consider carrying a different song set
Mobalytics suggests two Hunting Horns with different songs as a way to choose between buff sets. Its pairing guide is beta-based and does not establish how song effects persist or stack in the current game. Verify the live behavior before planning a rotation around those details.
Planning a sleep setup and wake-up hit? Treat it as a tactic to test
Mobalytics describes Dual Blades applying sleep status before Great Sword delivers a True Charged Slash wake-up hit. This is a plausible tactical concept, not a proven optimal combo: the guide is based on beta playtests and provides no controlled comparison of damage or hunt time.

How to settle on your own best pair
- Name the gap. Decide whether you need reach, another damage type, a status option, support utility or an alternate element.
- Check the live build. Review relevant weapon and skill behavior in the current game’s Hunter’s Notes or official documentation instead of assuming a beta guide’s details still apply.
- Account for skill overlap. Compare what armor skills support each weapon. A same-type pair may be easier to build around, while different types may offer more varied roles.
- Choose a simple switching cue. Carry the second weapon for the moments it helps—such as when the target is out of reach or you want to change damage type—rather than switching without a purpose.
- Keep the pair only if it helps your hunts. No cited source provides a controlled comparison, current pairing tier list, measured win rate, damage result or popularity statistic. Your best combination is the one that serves your hunt and that you can use comfortably.
