There’s no single best iPad game for everyone: the right pick depends on whether you want a story, a calming routine, a hard puzzle, or a quick match. Apple’s 2025 iPad Game of the Year was DREDGE, an atmospheric fishing adventure; for light competition, Apple named WHAT THE CLASH? its 2025 Apple Arcade Game of the Year. Below are picks by the kind of play they suit, plus what to check before downloading.
Best iPad game for story and atmosphere: DREDGE
DREDGE suits players who like a familiar, low-pressure activity that gradually takes on a darker tone. You fish, explore, and uncover a horror-tinged mystery; Apple’s App Store editors described it as a “creepy cozy” game that begins with calm waters and plentiful catches before revealing its haunting side. Apple named it 2025 iPad Game of the Year, an award-backed recommendation rather than a claim that it will suit every player. Apple’s 2025 App Store Awards announcement.
Choose it if you want exploration and mood as much as action. It is a weaker fit if you want constant multiplayer competition or a purely cheerful fishing game.
Best for quick, goofy competition: WHAT THE CLASH?
WHAT THE CLASH? is the pick for players who want short, playful contests rather than a long campaign. Apple describes its competitions as goofy and unpredictable, and named it 2025 Apple Arcade Game of the Year. It is part of Apple Arcade’s subscription catalog, so check that it is currently available in your region and that the subscription makes sense for you. Apple’s award recognition is not a promise that every game in the catalog is included forever. Apple’s awards announcement.

Best iPad games by the kind of play you want
These are useful starting points by genre and mood, not a definitive annual ranking. Apple’s live US iPad App Store page has featured these paid games in its chart; chart positions can change and do not establish an annual award or quality ranking. Check each current listing for price, age rating, in-app purchases, controller support, and offline behavior before buying.

How to choose a game you’ll keep playing
If you’re “looking for a long term game for my iPad,” start with the loop you want to return to, not just the genre label. Consider these questions before installing:
- Mood and genre: Do you want a relaxing routine, a tense story, a puzzle, or competitive action?
- Session length: Is the game satisfying in brief visits, or do you want a campaign and ongoing progression?
- Players: Is it designed for solo play, local play, or online multiplayer? Confirm the mode in the current listing.
- Connection: If you need to play without internet, verify offline availability for the specific title. A store collection or genre label alone is not a guarantee.
- Cost: Check whether the game is a paid download, free-to-play with in-app purchases, or included with Apple Arcade. Prices and terms vary by region and can change.
- Comfort and access: Check age ratings, accessibility options, and whether touch controls suit you.
- Controller: Check game-level compatibility before buying or pairing a controller; support is not universal.
When Apple Arcade makes sense
Apple Arcade is a subscription service with hundreds of games, and Apple’s Games app includes an Arcade tab. The catalog changes, so verify a particular game’s current availability and the subscription offer shown in your region rather than relying on an old list or price. Apple also describes social features for select single-player Arcade titles; that does not mean every Arcade game has multiplayer. Apple Arcade.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you use a controller with iPad games?
A controller is optional, and compatibility depends on the game. Apple’s iPadOS 26 documentation covers controller support and explains that a DualSense controller can pair with iPad over USB-C. Check the game’s listing and Apple’s current instructions for your iPad model and pairing method before choosing a controller. Apple’s iPad controller guide.

How to check current availability and details
- Open the game’s current App Store listing. Confirm it is available in your region and review the price, age rating, and in-app purchases.
- Check the details that affect your use. Look for controller compatibility, multiplayer modes, and whether the game can be played offline; do not infer these from the genre.
- If considering Arcade, open the Arcade tab in Apple’s Games app and check the current catalog and regional subscription offer.
- Use charts as discovery tools. Apple’s featured collections and paid chart can help surface options, but they are live placements, not a stable year-end ranking.
