The argument behind the headline is narrower: Xbox lost ground as a traditional console platform, as its exclusive slate thinned, hardware became more expensive, Game Pass changed, and Microsoft leaned further into PC and broader game distribution. Later Xbox announcements show that the company and its hardware plans continued.
What “Xbox died” means—and what it doesn’t
In his December 23, 2025 opinion article, Engadget’s Devindra Hardawar used “Xbox died” as a metaphor for the weakening position of Xbox as a conventional console ecosystem. It was not a report that Microsoft had stopped selling consoles, closed Xbox services, or left the games business. Read Hardawar’s argument at Engadget.
That distinction matters because “Xbox” can mean several things: Series S and Series X hardware, the Xbox console platform, Game Pass, Microsoft’s game studios, or the wider Xbox brand across PC and other devices. The 2025 critique concerns the console platform’s competitive standing, even as Microsoft’s gaming business continued.
Why the console-platform argument gained force in 2025
A less distinct exclusive slate
Hardawar pointed to Microsoft’s cancellations of the Perfect Dark reboot and Everwild, as well as Forza Horizon 5’s release on PlayStation 5, as signs of a weaker exclusive pipeline and a broader distribution strategy. The first two cancellations reduce the number of announced projects Xbox could point to as future console draws; bringing a prominent Xbox-associated game to a rival console also makes platform exclusivity a less reliable reason to choose Xbox.

Those examples support an argument about strategic direction, not proof that Microsoft would never release another Xbox exclusive. They are claims reported in Engadget’s article; the original announcements were not independently reviewed here.
A widening sales gap, with an important caveat
Engadget put Xbox Series S and Series X sales at approximately 33 million as of July 2025, attributing that estimate to Statista. It reported 84.2 million PS5 units as of November 2025, a figure Sony had confirmed. These figures point to a substantial difference in scale, but they are not a matched-date comparison: one is a third-party estimate for July and the other a company-confirmed figure for November. The original Statista page was not independently reviewed for this article.

Higher prices raised the stakes
In its December 2025 context, Engadget reported U.S. starting prices of $400 for Xbox Series S and $600 for the cheapest Series X. Those are dated figures, not current quotes. A higher entry price can make it harder to persuade a buyer to choose Xbox over a competing console—or to upgrade from an existing system—especially if that buyer sees fewer games that require Xbox hardware.
Game Pass became a tougher value calculation
Engadget reported Game Pass Ultimate at $29.99 per month in late 2025. That price later changed: Xbox Wire announced a U.S. reduction to $22.99 per month effective April 21, 2026, while noting that prices may vary by region. The same update said future Call of Duty games would no longer join Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch; existing titles would remain in the library, and new titles were expected in the following holiday season. Those changes alter the value proposition, but whether the subscription is worthwhile depends on the games a person plays and how often they use the catalog. See Xbox Wire’s Game Pass update.

What Xbox’s later announcements tell us
Developments after 2025 make a literal reading of “Xbox died” untenable. They do not erase the competitive concerns above, but they show that Microsoft continued investing in Xbox hardware and services.
- June 2025: Xbox and AMD announced a multiyear silicon partnership that included future first-party consoles. Xbox Wire’s partnership announcement.
- March 2026: Xbox described Project Helix as a next-generation first-party console intended to play Xbox and PC games. The announcement said developer alpha hardware was planned from 2027; it did not give a retail launch date or final specifications. Xbox Wire’s Project Helix announcement.
- April 2026: Xbox leadership acknowledged player dissatisfaction and set out a reset. Xbox Wire’s internal message, signed “Matt & Asha,” stated, “Players are frustrated.” The sentence is presented as a joint leadership message, not attributed to one individual. Read the Xbox Wire leadership message.
Xbox President Sarah Bond also described the company’s Windows strategy in Engadget’s reporting on the AMD announcement, saying Xbox was “working closely with the Windows team to ensure that Windows is the number one platform for gaming.” That goal suggests Microsoft sees Xbox gaming extending beyond a single living-room console, a direction that can benefit players who want more ways to access games while making the console platform’s distinct role less clear.

Is Xbox dying, or changing what Xbox is?
For someone who defines Xbox by console sales, a strong exclusive lineup, and reasons to buy a Series S or X instead of a PlayStation, the 2025 critique has substance: Engadget described a weaker competitive position, rising reported hardware prices, changes to Game Pass, and games reaching beyond Xbox consoles.
For someone who defines Xbox as Microsoft’s gaming ecosystem, the picture is different. The AMD partnership, Project Helix, Game Pass, and Microsoft’s stated focus on Windows show an ongoing strategy rather than an exit. The unresolved question is whether that wider ecosystem can still make an Xbox console feel essential—or whether the console becomes one way among several to play Xbox games.

How to judge Xbox for your own setup
The headline is a verdict about platform standing, not a buying recommendation. If you are deciding where to play, weigh the factors that affect your library and habits rather than treating “dead” as a literal status:
- Exclusivity: Check where the specific games you want are available and whether you need an Xbox console to play them.
- Total cost: Compare the current local console price and subscription terms, not the U.S. prices reported in late 2025.
- Subscription fit: Consider the catalog you will actually play, the value of launch-day releases to you, and whether the current Game Pass terms justify recurring payments.
- Form factor: A home console, gaming PC, or handheld differs in portability and ease of use. Project Helix is announced as a future console, but its final specifications and retail timing are not established in the cited announcement.
- Existing library: If you own older Xbox games or hardware, backward compatibility and access to that library may matter more than the platform’s current sales position.
There is no complete, like-for-like hardware or handheld comparison in the cited material, so these are decision factors, not a tested ranking of products.
