There is no single best build in the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR): the right choice depends on whether you want a tough lightsaber fighter, a Force-heavy controller, or a character with more skills and implant options. These three class combinations offer distinct trade-offs, not a universal ranking. They assume the original game; build-guide numbers below are attributed calculations, not tested performance results.

How to choose a KOTOR build

KOTOR starts you as a Scout, Soldier, or Scoundrel. As the story progresses, you gain a Jedi class: Guardian, Sentinel, or Consular. Your classes shape vitality, skills, feats, Force points, and Force powers. The game’s manual describes the broad class differences; GameSpot’s guide also covers attributes, skills, feats, and powers.

  • Choose Soldier/Guardian if durability and direct melee combat matter most.
  • Choose Scout/Consular if you want more Force points and powers, while retaining Scout utility.
  • Choose Scout/Guardian if you want a capable saber fighter with more skills and implant-related options than the Soldier route.

The level split matters too. Remaining in your starting class longer changes the eventual mix of class features and affects how the early game feels. The level-8 starting-class comparisons below are examples from one solo-play guide, not rules that make those splits optimal for every character.

1. Soldier/Guardian: the straightforward saber fighter

Why choose it

This is the clearest pick for a player who wants to survive close-range fights and rely on physical combat. The manual characterizes Soldiers as combat specialists with high vitality and fast feat progression. Guardians also gain more vitality and fewer Force points per level than Consulars. That combination favors a durable fighter over a character built to spend Force powers frequently.

How to build around the role

Prioritize Strength for melee accuracy and damage, then Constitution to support vitality. Consider Wisdom or Charisma if you want more Force-related capability, but do not treat them as mandatory for a saber-focused character. The manual says Wisdom affects Jedi Force points and the difficulty of resisting Force powers; Charisma affects Force-related feats and powers as well as Persuade.

One solo role-play guide lists an 8/12 Soldier/Guardian comparison at 200 vitality, 14 feats, 88 Force points, and 13 Force powers. Those are the guide’s totals under assumptions that zero out modifiers from attributes, equipment, skills, feats, and Force powers. The same author ultimately proposes a 7/13 split for that guide’s solo-survival goal; neither split is a universal prescription. See the Solo Role Play Guide for its comparison and assumptions.

2. Scout/Consular: Force control with utility

Why choose it

Consular is the natural option for players who want a wider Force toolkit. The manual gives Consulars fewer vitality and more Force points per level than Guardians. Starting as a Scout adds a utility-oriented foundation: the manual describes Scouts as having 8 vitality per level and average skill and feat progression, while the solo guide’s comparison credits Scout progression with more skill points, free implant feats, and Uncanny Dodge.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic - Xbox
  • You are a young Jedi Knight, charged with leading a group of freedom fighters across the galaxy
  • Recruit droids, humans, Wookies and other races to join your resistance group -- and train them in great mini-games like racing swoop bikes or manning turret guns
  • Journey to dozens to unique locations, from the Wookie homeworld of Kashyyk to the Jedi Academy of Dantooine
  • Customizable and evolving characters keep the story fresh and the gameplay interesting -- especially when you have to choose between the Light & Dark Sides of The Force

Build priorities and trade-offs

Wisdom supports Force capacity and resistance difficulty; Charisma contributes to Force-related abilities and Persuade. Dexterity can help with Defense. A community recommendation suggests emphasizing Wisdom and Dexterity, investing in Persuade, and taking only a few Scout levels before becoming a Consular. Treat that as one player’s approach, not an official formula: your attribute allocation should reflect whether you value Force effectiveness, defense, or dialogue and utility skills. The suggestion appears in this Steam discussion.

In the solo guide’s 8/12 Scout/Consular comparison, the character has 136 Force points and 15 Force powers, with lower vitality and base attack than its Soldier/Guardian comparison. These are guide calculations under its stated zero-modifier assumptions, not a performance test. A separate Consular/Guardian build guide focuses on area damage and buffs and explicitly assumes Yavin DLC; recommendations tied to gear or content in that guide may not apply without the DLC.

3. Scout/Guardian: a fighter with a utility cushion

Why choose it

Pick this route if you want a lightsaber-capable Guardian but would rather have more character utility than the Soldier start provides. It is a compromise, not a strict upgrade: Scout brings skill and implant options, while Soldier/Guardian has the edge in the solo guide’s comparison for vitality and feats.

What the comparison shows

The solo guide lists its 8/12 Scout/Guardian at 184 vitality, 11 selectable feats, 88 Force points, 13 Force powers, and 45 skill points. The corresponding 8/12 Soldier/Guardian comparison has 200 vitality and 14 feats. The guide’s figures use its zero-modifier assumptions, so read them as a class-progression comparison rather than a prediction of your final character sheet. Scout progression also supplies free Implant feats and Uncanny Dodge in that guide’s accounting.

This option makes sense when you value skills alongside combat, especially if you do not want your player character to cover every utility role. Party members can provide some skills and other capabilities, so a build need not maximize every category to work well.

Which attributes should you level?

Choose attributes based on the job you want the character to do. The manual describes their effects as follows:

Rank #4
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords
  • Multiple Jedi classes to choose from, to start each game with unique Jedi abilities
  • Incredible new Force powers, weapons, locations, characters and classes add to the richness of the game
  • As your character makes choices through the story, you'll choose the Light or Dark sides of The Force
  • Cameo appearances characters in the first game enhance the continuity and story flow
  • Special content will be available for The Sith Lords via Xbox Live
  • Strength: melee damage and chance to hit.
  • Dexterity: ranged attack rolls and Defense.
  • Constitution: modifies vitality gained each level.
  • Wisdom: Jedi Force points and the difficulty of resisting Force powers.
  • Intelligence: skill points.
  • Charisma: Force-related feats and powers, and Persuade.

For a melee-first Soldier/Guardian, Strength and Constitution fit the role. For a Force-focused Scout/Consular, Wisdom is central, with Dexterity or Charisma depending on your defensive and dialogue priorities. A Scout/Guardian can balance melee attributes with enough Intelligence or Charisma to support the utility you actually plan to use. These are role-based priorities, not fixed point-by-point templates.

What published build guides assume

Community build advice differs because it optimizes for different conditions: solo survival, alignment, a particular class split, or access to Yavin DLC. The solo guide’s figures are explicitly conditional calculations, while the separate Consular/Guardian guide includes a Yavin-DLC assumption. Neither establishes an objectively best build for all players. Decide first whether you want durability, Force access, or utility, then use a template only if its assumptions match your playthrough.
