There is no single best build for every Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree encounter. A heavy melee setup rewards deliberate hits and defense; agile weapons favor speed and positioning; sorcery and incantations trade casting resources for ranged options; and throwing weapons or perfumes have fresh reasons to revisit after patch 1.17. Choose around how you want to manage stamina, damage, and risk—and whether you mean PvE or PvP.

This guide is current to Bandai Namco’s August 27, 2026 patch notes, which list App Ver. 1.17 and Regulation Ver. 1.17. Exact stat sheets and damage rankings are not established by those notes, so the options below are playstyle comparisons, not tested level-by-level builds.

What changed for DLC builds in patch 1.17?

Patch 1.17 is a meaningful checkpoint for older build advice. Bandai Namco’s official patch 1.17 notes are dated August 27, 2026, list PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series X|S, and Steam, and say the update is required for online play. The notes document balance changes, not an overall build ranking.

  • Throwing weapons: Smithscript Axe, Smithscript Spear, and Spear of the Impaler received improved throwing-attack stamina cost and power; Smithscript Greathammer received increased throwing power. Smithscript Dagger received increased critical power.
  • Perfumes: the five perfume bottles listed in the notes received increased attack power, making perfume-focused setups worth reassessing.
  • Shields: a set of shields received increased guard boost and reduced weight, while another group of greatshields received increased guard boost.
  • Intelligence weapon option: Intelligence scaling on Carian Sorcery Sword now increases attack power for all damage types.
  • Magic: Founding Rain of Stars and Carian Retaliation sorcery, and Feather of the Divine Bird, O, Flame!, and Rain of Fire incantations received changes.

These adjustments are reasons to reconsider those options, not proof that any is now the strongest choice. Patch 1.17 also identifies some changes as PvP-specific: Rakshasa’s Great Katana increases damage taken from other players while attacking, and Rugalea’s Roar has reduced power against other players. Keep those notes separate from PvE boss advice.

Choose a build by how you want to fight

For a useful comparison, weigh more than damage type. Your weapon’s reach and moveset determine when you can safely attack; stamina limits both offense and defense; armor and shields affect how much risk you can tolerate; spells and weapon skills draw on FP; and the core equipment must be obtainable and upgraded. No current source cited here provides a complete, objectively ranked DLC build list or verified stat allocation for each archetype.

Build lane Damage approach Strength Trade-off to consider Best fit
Strength / heavy melee High-impact weapon hits Rewards committing to openings and can pair naturally with a defensive playstyle Weapon weight and stamina use can pressure equip load and leave less room for repeated attacks or dodges Players who prefer measured attacks and can manage recovery windows
Dexterity / agile weapons Faster weapon attacks Can suit players who prefer mobility and shorter attack commitments Fast attacks still cost stamina, and aggressive enemies can punish poor timing; compare reach and damage per hit rather than assuming speed wins Players who favor positioning and frequent openings
Intelligence / sorcery Sorcery with a melee fallback Offers ranged spell choices alongside weapon options Casting uses FP and requires safe opportunities; spell selection and a dependable close-range answer matter Players willing to manage casting windows and FP
Faith / incantations Incantations plus weapon support Can provide a flexible mix of offensive and support options Incantations require FP and room to cast; patch 1.17 changed selected spells, including Rain of Fire Players who want a toolkit rather than one attack pattern
Arcane / status hybrid Status effects or mixed damage Can center the build on a status-oriented or hybrid weapon plan The available sources do not establish a precise stat spread or universal status ranking; verify weapon requirements and effects before committing Players prepared to build around a specific weapon and encounter plan
Perfume / throwing specialist Perfume bottles or ranged throwing attacks Several related weapons and perfumes received direct 1.17 buffs A patch buff alone does not establish top-tier damage; confirm the exact weapon, skill, resource cost, and availability you intend to use Players who want a patch-aware niche option

Which build lane suits a PvE boss run?

Strength: trade stamina and load for impact

A heavy melee approach makes sense if you want to concentrate on high-impact hits and defensive equipment. Its practical cost is not just weapon weight: stamina also pays for attacking, blocking, and dodging. Leave enough capacity and stamina to respond after a committed swing instead of building solely around the heaviest weapon you can equip. Compare a candidate’s reach, recovery, and skill to a faster alternative before settling on it.

Dexterity: prioritize openings and movement

Agile weapons can suit players who want frequent attacks and quick repositioning, but speed does not remove the need to manage stamina or enemy aggression. Reach and moveset matter as much as attack tempo: a fast weapon that cannot connect safely in a particular opening may be less useful than one with a slower, longer-reaching move. Patch 1.14 changed a number of DLC-era weapon families, and 1.17 should also be checked for any named weapon before relying on an older ranking.

Intelligence: plan spells and a close-range answer

Sorcery builds need a spell selection that fits the openings you actually get, plus a weapon option for times when casting is unsafe or FP is low. Carian Sorcery Sword deserves a fresh look after 1.17 changed how its Intelligence scaling contributes to attack power across all damage types. That change does not establish that it outperforms other weapons; compare it with your intended spells and melee fallback.

Faith: treat incantations as a flexible toolkit

Incantations can support a mix of offense and utility, but the build still needs to account for casting time, FP, and the weapon used when a spell window does not appear. Patch 1.17 changed selected incantations, including Rain of Fire, so older evaluations may not reflect the current version. Do not assume a spell is effective against a particular boss or damage type without checking that claim against a current source.

Arcane: commit only after checking the weapon plan

An Arcane or status hybrid is most useful when it is built around a specific weapon and a clear damage plan. Confirm its attribute requirements, status behavior, and whether your intended encounters give you room to apply that effect. The available sources do not support a universal Arcane spread or a claim that one status setup is best for the expansion.

Perfumes and throwing weapons: use the 1.17 changes as a prompt to compare

If you enjoy ranged attacks without centering the build on conventional spells, the 1.17 changes make several throwing weapons and perfume bottles worth reassessing. Choose the exact item and skill package first, then account for stamina or other resource demands and how it fits your close-range plan. The patch notes establish direct changes to these families, but do not give comparative damage totals or declare them the best builds.

How to turn an archetype into a usable build

  1. Pick the combat loop. Decide whether you want to trade deliberate melee hits, attack quickly and reposition, cast from openings, or use throws and perfumes. That choice determines which weapons and resources deserve priority.
  2. Check weapon requirements and scaling. Verify current requirements and attribute interactions for the exact item in your intended version. Do not copy a stat spread from an older guide without checking whether its weapon or skill changed.
  3. Budget survivability and stamina. Make room for health, armor or a shield, and enough stamina to attack and still evade or block. Heavy weapons and guarding can compete for stamina and equip load.
  4. Account for FP and consumables. Spell- and skill-led setups need a plan for FP; throwing or perfume options may have their own resource constraints. Avoid assuming buffs are always active or that a build works only under ideal conditions.
  5. Confirm equipment access and upgrades. Verify where the core weapon, spell, or shield is obtained and what is needed to upgrade it before planning a progression route. A guide page can help navigate gear and Scadutree fragment coverage, but its June 20, 2024 build guidance predates the current patch checkpoint.
  6. Keep the game mode clear. Build for PvE boss progression or PvP rather than mixing their balance assumptions. A player-specific adjustment in the patch notes does not automatically describe PvE performance.

Why older build lists may mislead

Version 1.14, dated September 10, 2024, adjusted the Shadow of the Erdtree final boss and made weapon, skill, spell, and incantation changes. Patch 1.17 came later and changed additional equipment and magic. An older guide can still help with broad ideas, but its specific weapon evaluations may reflect different balance conditions. PC Gamer’s Shadow of the Erdtree guide organizes build, weapon, armor, fragment, and boss resources; treat it as a navigation aid, not evidence of a current ranking.

Scadutree fragments are a DLC progression consideration, but the sources cited here do not establish their exact effects, locations, or recommended levels. Check a current location reference rather than relying on an unverified route or level target.

Does the DLC require the base game?

Yes. Bandai Namco’s official editions page says Shadow of the Erdtree requires ELDEN RING and also lists an edition pairing the base game with the expansion. Check the listing for your platform and format before purchasing; availability and edition contents can vary.
