“27 Superhero RPGs That Kick Ass And Take Names” is a dated discovery roundup, not a current ranking or a complete guide to what is available today. Published by Gizmodo on April 29, 2022, Linda Codega’s list brings together different kinds of superhero roleplaying material, including official game books, hacks, and solo journaling games. Its accessible excerpts highlight games with notably different premises, from teenage hero teams to Japanese-style sentai transformations.
What the 27-game list covers
The original Gizmodo article frames its collection as a mix of the author’s favorites and games found online. That matters when using the list: it is a discovery roundup rather than a ranked comparison or a comprehensive survey of superhero tabletop RPGs. The article’s introduction also signals that its entries are not all the same kind of product. Some are official game books, while others are hacks or solo journaling games. Three examples show the range
Masks: A New Generation
Gizmodo describes Masks: A New Generation as a game about teenage superheroes trying to make it as a new team. That premise puts a developing group of young heroes at the center of play.
Henshin! A Sentai RPG
Henshin! A Sentai RPG adapts Japanese transformation-superhero plots into a roleplaying game. It offers a different superhero flavor from a story focused on a new teenage team.

Start with the kind of superhero story and play format you want, rather than assuming all 27 entries are comparable rulebooks:
Rank #2
- LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 features an expanded line-up of iconic Marvel Super Heroes and Super Villains from different eras and realities, including Guardians of the Galaxy characters, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax as well as Doctor Strange, Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Man 2099, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Ant-Man, Captain Marvel, Kang the Conqueror and a whole lot more!
- Premise and tone: The excerpts establish teenage team-building for Masks: A New Generation and sentai transformation plots for Henshin! A Sentai RPG.
- Group or solo play: The introduction says the list includes solo journaling games as well as other RPG material, but the available excerpts do not identify which entries are solo games.
- Type of material: The roundup mixes official books, hacks, and journaling games. Check an individual entry before assuming it is a standalone rulebook.
The available descriptions do not provide a consistent comparison of rules complexity, prices, current editions, or availability. Treat the roundup as a source of leads; confirm the edition, format, and whether a game is currently obtainable with its publisher or seller before making a purchase decision.
