For a dependable first playthrough, build a single-class Ranger with high Dexterity, choose the Archery fighting style if you plan to fight at range, and reach Ranger level 5 for Extra Attack. At level 3, choose Swarmkeeper; then shape your swarm and spells around either straightforward ranged pressure or a more tactical control plan. Neither approach is a universal winner: the archer is simpler to pilot, while forced movement and Spike Growth reward careful positioning.
Is Swarmkeeper an official BG3 subclass?
Yes. Larian added the official Swarmkeeper Ranger subclass in Patch 8, released on 15 April 2025 as version 4.1.1.6758295. Patch 8 added 12 subclasses in total, and Rangers select their subclass at level 3. Larian described Patch 8 as the last game patch to introduce new content, while allowing for minor bug fixes. This is separate from the fan-made Swarmkeeper Ranger Subclass mod on Nexus Mods, which was last updated in May 2024, before the official subclass arrived. You do not need that mod to play the official Swarmkeeper. See the separate Nexus Mods listing.
What is the best all-around Swarmkeeper build?
For a first run, stay Ranger through level 12. This keeps progression straightforward and avoids relying on respec or multiclass timing. The baseline below is designed for a ranged-weapon Ranger, not a claim that one race, feat, or equipment set is mandatory.

- Choose Archery at Ranger level 2 if you intend to rely on ranged weapon attacks. Alcast describes the style as granting a +2 bonus to ranged weapon attack rolls. See Alcast’s Swarmkeeper build guide.
- Select Swarmkeeper at Ranger level 3. Choose a swarm that suits your intended play style; it need not dictate every later decision.
- Reach Ranger level 5. Extra Attack lets you make two weapon attacks when you take the Attack action, an important single-class power milestone.
- Choose spells and positioning to fit your combat plan. Ranged pressure and mobility make a conventional archer approach; Spike Growth and forced movement create a more setup-heavy control approach.
Race, background, and other character choices can follow your role-play preferences. The available guides do not establish a mandatory choice or a controlled performance ranking across difficulties and party compositions.
Which Swarmkeeper approach should you choose?

These are different ways to use the subclass, not a measured damage comparison. For a lower-friction first build, start with the single-class archer baseline. Choose the control plan if you enjoy setting up terrain and steering enemy movement. See GameStegy’s control-focused build guide.

Which swarm should you pick?
GameStegy discusses Legion of Bees, Cloud of Jellyfish, and Flurry of Moths, with different damage or debilitating effects. Its control-oriented recommendation favors Legion of Bees because it can push enemies into Spike Growth. That is a recommendation for that particular control loop, not a universal best choice for every Ranger.
For the archer route, choose based on the effect you want alongside ranged attacks and mobility. For the Spike Growth route, prioritize the swarm effect that helps move enemies through the hazardous area. The guides describe the options differently, and do not establish a single best swarm across all play styles.

How to use the build in combat
With the ranged baseline
- Use your weapon attacks from a position that keeps you away from immediate close-range pressure where possible.
- At Ranger 5, make use of Extra Attack when taking the Attack action.
- Use mobility and positioning as part of the plan rather than treating the character as a stationary archer.
With the control alternative
- Place Spike Growth where enemies are likely to move through it.
- Use forced movement, including the Legion of Bees interaction highlighted by GameStegy, to push enemies across the hazardous terrain.
- Expect to spend more attention on terrain, enemy positions, and setup than with a simple ranged-attack routine.
Should you multiclass?
Not for the recommended first-run baseline. Continuing Ranger gives you a clear route to Ranger 5 and Extra Attack without requiring a respec. GameStegy explores later respec and multiclass options for its more involved control build, but the available guides do not establish that those choices outperform staying Ranger for every difficulty or party. Treat them as optional tuning for players comfortable changing their build, not a prerequisite for Swarmkeeper to work.

D&D Beyond’s sample PDF presents a tabletop Swarmkeeper Ranger build, which can be useful as optional background reading, but it does not establish that tabletop rules and BG3’s implementation are identical.
