MENACE is the timely pick for turn-based sci-fi tactics, but it is still in Early Access. Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is the latest mainline Civilization, while Civilization VI remains a strong alternative—PC Gamer names it its choice in the series. This guide compares their focus and development state rather than claiming one game is best for everyone.
At a glance: which strategy game fits you?
| Game | Best fit | Strategy scale | Development state |
|---|---|---|---|
| MENACE | Players after turn-based sci-fi combat and tactical missions | Campaign strategy and platoon tactics | Early Access; content is still developing |
| Sid Meier’s Civilization VII | Players who want the latest mainline Civilization on PC | Empire-building | Released; PC availability is listed on the official Civilization site |
| Sid Meier’s Civilization VI | Players who prefer this series entry or want PC Gamer’s recommended Civilization | Empire-building | Released; PC Gamer highlights its districts and expansion additions |
MENACE: turn-based sci-fi tactics, with an Early Access caveat
MENACE is a strategy RPG from Overhype Studios, published by Hooded Horse. Steam lists its Early Access release date as February 5, 2026. Its premise centers on leading a strike force: respond to distress calls, train and equip infantry, deploy tanks and mechs, and fight turn-based battles. [Steam listing]

Its appeal is the combination of campaign-level choices and tactical platoon combat, rather than the long-term empire-building of Civilization. PC Gamer describes that blend as campaign strategy and platoon tactics, but cautions that the Early Access version stops before all of the pieces come together. Treat it as a work in progress, not a finished campaign. PC Gamer writer Jonathan Bolding wrote, “Menace has the bones to become one of the best strategy and tactics games released in years.” That is a judgment about its potential, not a claim that the current Early Access build is complete. Civilization VII: the latest mainline Civilization on PC
If you want the newest mainline Civilization, Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is the straightforward choice. The official Civilization site lists PC availability through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Its site gives a February 11, 2025 launch date, while Steam displays February 10, 2025; the two sources differ by one day in their displayed dates. [Official Civilization VII site] [Steam listing]

Choose it for the series’ empire-building focus, not for squad-level battlefield tactics. Steam lists online PvP and LAN PvP among its features. If multiplayer or playing across platforms is central to your decision, check the current Steam listing for the exact supported modes and cross-platform details before buying; store features can change. Civilization VI: a strong alternative within the series
Civilization VI is worth considering if you are choosing between Civilization entries rather than looking only for the newest release. PC Gamer’s strategy guide names VI as its game of choice in the franchise, citing its district system and additions from expansions. That is the publication’s editorial preference, not an objective consensus ranking or a guarantee it will suit every player. [PC Gamer’s strategy guide]
Rank #2
- EXPANSIVE EMPIRES: See the marvels of your empire spread across the map like never before.
- ACTIVE RESEARCH: Unlock boosts that speed your civilization's progress through history.
- DYNAMIC DIPLOMACY: Interactions with other civilizations change over the course of the game.
- COMBINED ARMS: Expanding on the “one unit per tile” design, support units can now be embedded with other units.
How to choose between them
- Pick MENACE if your priority is turn-based sci-fi missions, infantry, vehicles, and tactical combat—and you are comfortable playing a game whose content is still being developed.
- Pick Civilization VII if you want the latest mainline Civilization option on PC or are checking its listed multiplayer features.
- Consider Civilization VI if you want another Civilization entry and find PC Gamer’s preference for its district system and expansion additions compelling.
These games serve different strategy appetites: MENACE focuses on campaign and platoon tactics, while both Civilization games center on building an empire. The available sources do not establish a directly comparable score or performance benchmark across the three, so the most useful comparison is their play style and, for MENACE, its Early Access status.
