Rune charts may describe different historical alphabets—or mix historical letters with modern symbolic readings—so first check which alphabet, language, and period a chart covers.
What are runes?
Runes are characters used in historical writing systems by Norse and other Germanic peoples. The word Futhark comes from the sound values of its first six characters: f, u, th, a, r, and k. It names a family of related alphabets, not one fixed set used unchanged across time.
Which rune alphabets are there?
The main systems readers are likely to encounter are related, but they differ in character count, sound values, language, and historical setting.
| System | Characters | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Elder Futhark | 24, as described in NOVA/PBS’s 2011 educational presentation | An earlier Germanic runic alphabet; do not assume its chart applies to Viking Age writing. NOVA/PBS: “Write Your Name in Runes” |
| Younger Futhark | 16 | The reduced runic alphabet used in the Viking Age. The Viking Ship Museum: “Runes – Viking Age alphabet” |
| Anglo-Saxon Futhorc | Not stated in the cited overview | A related system; its name and forms should not be treated as interchangeable with either Futhark. Norse Mythology for Smart People: “Runes” |
A chart labelled only “the runes” leaves out information needed to interpret it. Look for the alphabet’s name, the language represented, and the period the chart describes.

Why Viking Age runes do not translate neatly into English
The 16-character Younger Futhark did not provide a separate rune for every spoken sound. A rune could represent more than one sound, so writing or transliterating a modern English name is not a simple one-letter-for-one-rune substitution. The Viking Ship Museum puts the limitation plainly: “The Viking Age alphabet lacks some runes to express all sounds in the language.” Its overview of the Viking Age alphabet explains the sound mapping.
That is why two charts may give different-looking results: they may use different alphabets, represent different languages, or follow different transliteration choices. Before using a chart to spell a name, check its stated system and method rather than assuming it is a direct conversion into modern English.

What do runes mean?
Rune names and historical rune poems provide evidence about names and associations in particular cultural settings. They do not establish one universal symbolic dictionary that applies to every rune in every alphabet and period. A modern list of meanings may be useful for a modern symbolic practice, but it should be labelled as interpretation rather than presented as a definitive ancient key.
When comparing a chart or guide, check whether it distinguishes attested rune names and sound values from modern symbolic meanings. Also note which historical alphabet and language it covers; otherwise, claims that a rune “means” something may blend material from different traditions.

Were runes used for fortune-telling?
Written runes and modern rune readings are different claims. Stories or evidence about magical uses of written runes do not by themselves establish that people in the past used the present-day practice of drawing or casting rune tokens. The contemporary overview at Norse Gods characterizes pouch-based casting as a modern invention without ancient pedigree. That is a claim about this specific reading method, not a reason to treat every historical use of runes as ordinary writing alone.

- Identify the system and date. Look for Elder Futhark, Younger Futhark, or Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, and a stated historical context.
- Check the language and sound values. A historical alphabet may not map one-to-one onto modern English letters.
- Separate evidence from interpretation. Rune names, sound values, and rune-poem associations are not the same thing as a modern symbolic reading.
- Watch for universal claims. A source that gives one timeless meaning for every rune without specifying its tradition is flattening distinct evidence.
For a historical introduction, start with an educational or museum explanation that names its alphabet and period. For a modern reading system, use a guide that openly identifies its meanings as contemporary interpretation.
