If EVE Online crashes when you click Play, first identify whether the launcher is failing or the game client is closing. A launcher black screen calls for launcher-specific steps; a client crash may point to files, graphics initialization, drivers, overlays, or system stability. Try the eight fixes below in order, stopping when the game launches reliably. None is a guaranteed cure.
First, identify where startup fails
Check CCP’s system requirements and the EVE Status monitor before changing your PC. A current service incident can affect multiple players, and requirements may change.
- Launcher failure: The launcher will not open, stays black, or fails before you can select Play.
- Client failure: The launcher works, but the game client closes or crashes after you click Play.
These symptoms overlap, but cache and process fixes for a launcher black screen are not the same as graphics troubleshooting for a client crash.
1. Check whether EVE is experiencing a wider issue
Look at EVE Status and CCP’s recent announcements at the time of the crash. If CCP reports a relevant service issue, avoid making disruptive changes to your installation while it is ongoing. If there is no matching incident, continue with the local checks.

2. Close stuck launcher processes and retry
For a black screen or Steam launcher that will not load, close the relevant processes before reopening the launcher.
- Open Windows Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- End any remaining EVE Online, EVE Launcher, and QtWebEngineProcess tasks.
- Start the launcher again and test Play.
CCP also lists running the launcher as administrator as an option for permission-related startup problems. Use that only as a test if permissions appear to be the issue; it is not a general crash fix. See CCP’s Steam launcher black-screen guidance.
3. Verify EVE’s game files in the launcher
Missing or damaged installation files can prevent the client from starting. In the EVE Launcher, select the cogwheel, choose EVE Online, then select Verify Game Files. The launcher checks the installation and repairs or downloads files it finds missing or corrupted.

If you installed EVE through Steam, CCP says to use the EVE Launcher for this repair: Steam does not manage or repair EVE’s game files. Follow CCP’s instructions for verifying EVE files in a Steam installation.

4. Clear the cache that matches the failure
A stale or damaged cache can contribute to startup trouble, but clearing it is a troubleshooting test, not proof that cache caused the crash. EVE has separate launcher and game-client cache/settings data, so target the one that matches the symptom.
Launcher black screen
For the Steam-specific launcher issue, CCP’s instructions describe deleting the launcher cache under %localappdata%CCPEVE. Close both the launcher and Steam first, then locate the folder for that installation and follow CCP’s launcher cache instructions.

Client crash after Play
If the game client opens far enough to use its menus, CCP documents cache clearing from the in-game Reset Settings tab. If it does not, close the client and use the relevant local application data folders described in CCP’s client cache instructions. Do not restore old cache or settings files as part of the test; CCP cautions that reusing them may bring the problem back.
5. Test the other DirectX mode and reduce graphics settings
If the client crashes while initializing graphics, try the alternate graphics API. CCP lists both DX12 and DX11 as launcher options; switching to DX11 is a diagnostic test, not a universal fix. Change the DirectX setting in the launcher’s settings, then try starting the client again.
If the client remains open long enough to reach its graphics settings, reduce overall quality, shadows, and anti-aliasing. If that stops the crash, increase settings one at a time to identify which change brings it back. CCP’s graphics troubleshooting guidance covers these tests.

6. Update the graphics driver
Install a current driver for your graphics card from AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel. If a normal update does not help, CCP’s driver guidance includes manufacturer-specific cleanup or clean-install options: AMD Cleanup Utility, NVIDIA’s custom clean installation, and Intel’s driver guidance.
Intel graphics drivers may be customized by a PC manufacturer. If a generic Intel driver causes an incompatibility, check the computer maker’s driver package. Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is an advanced option; skip it if you are not comfortable with a clean driver removal. Use CCP’s graphics-driver installation instructions for the appropriate route.

Temporarily disable overlays such as Steam, Discord, or GeForce Experience, then close unnecessary background apps and retry. If you use an overclock, return the system to its normal settings for the test. CCP notes that overclocking can make hardware unstable, including factory-overclocked settings.

Also check that the PC has adequate ventilation and is not overheating. If you suspect a hardware malfunction, CCP recommends consulting a certified PC technician rather than guessing which component to replace.
8. Check requirements and send CCP useful diagnostics
CCP’s requirements page, updated June 23, 2026, lists the following Windows thresholds. They are published specifications, not a guarantee that every PC meeting them will be crash-free.

CCP says a PC meeting the minimum is expected to run all features at low settings and 1024×768. To check DirectX support in Windows, run dxdiag, open the Display tab, and check Feature Levels or DDI Version for 11 or higher.
If the crash persists, gather evidence before contacting CCP. The launcher’s Support section can generate a support payload with DxDiag and launcher logs, plus network diagnostics when relevant. On Windows, launcher logs are under %APPDATA%EVE OnlineLogs; CCP asks for the latest five logs or those matching the failure date. For intermittent client crashes, start LogLite before launching the game so it can capture client-side diagnostics. Crash dumps, when available, are commonly found in %LOCALAPPDATA%CCPEVECrashesReports or %LOCALAPPDATA%CCPEVEReports. Send relevant files and a description of the failure through CCP’s support or bug-report channels.
