Yes—some Nintendo Switch games let you play online without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo explicitly names Fortnite; Epic Games confirms the same for Fall Guys. Nintendo’s U.S. free-to-start catalog also lists Rocket League and Warframe, but a free download by itself does not prove that online play is subscription-free. Check each game’s current listing before you count on multiplayer access.

Free-to-start games that still need a requirements check
Nintendo’s U.S. free-to-start catalog also lists Rocket League and Warframe as free downloads. That establishes their download model in that catalog, not whether every online mode is available without a membership. The official sources cited here do not separately confirm their membership requirements, so inspect the current eShop or Nintendo product listing before downloading specifically for subscription-free multiplayer.
“Free-to-start” describes how a game is obtained; it is not a blanket guarantee that every online feature is available without Nintendo Switch Online. Requirements can differ by game and may change.

How to check a game before you play
- Open the game’s Nintendo eShop listing or Nintendo product page for your region.
- Look for the online-play requirements and any notice about Nintendo Switch Online. Check the information for the particular mode you want to use.
- If you have a physical release published after September 18, 2018, check the back of the box; Nintendo says it also notes online requirements and features there.
- Confirm any additional conditions, such as an internet connection or a separate game account, in the current listing or the publisher’s support information.
Nintendo directs players to individual game listings because its examples do not form a complete list of every qualifying title. Store availability and online requirements can vary by region and change over time.

Many games do require a membership for online co-op or competitive play. Nintendo gives Mario Kart World, Splatoon 3, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as examples. A game’s particular online requirements are the deciding factor, not simply whether it has an internet-connected feature.

Some Switch services remain available without a membership, including Nintendo eShop access, adding and managing friends, parental controls, system and game updates, and game news. Access to these services does not mean that a game’s multiplayer mode is also membership-free.
