Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 launched on November 19, 2024, but players soon encountered long loads, errors and missing aircraft. Microsoft attributed the launch disruption to an overloaded service handling data requests for new game systems, apologized, and said it was gradually bringing players into the simulator. The company later reported that access and streaming problems had been resolved; those updates describe the 2024 launch, not the game’s current service status.
What caused the Flight Simulator 2024 launch problems?
In its November 20, 2024 launch-day update, Microsoft said a service handling requests for new systems—including career mode and missions—had become overloaded. “The server responsible for handling data requests got overloaded, causing delays and errors,” the team said. Microsoft connected that overload with long loading times and missing content, including aircraft.
The explanation is Microsoft’s account of the incident. It identifies an overloaded request-handling service, but does not specify a deeper infrastructure component or provide an independent post-incident analysis.
When did Microsoft apologize, and how did the situation change?
| Date | Microsoft’s update | What players were told |
|---|---|---|
| November 19, 2024 | Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 launched. | Players began encountering launch-period access and loading problems. |
| November 20, 2024 | Microsoft said a service for data requests was overloaded, causing delays and errors. The team said it had addressed the issues and was bringing players in at a steady pace. | Long loading times and missing aircraft were among the symptoms Microsoft named. The team apologized: “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.” |
| November 21, 2024 | Jorg Neumann, Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, said access and bandwidth problems continued as more users came online globally. A separate official update said capacity had increased, but access issues remained. | Neumann thanked the community and apologized for the frustrating experience. The earlier statement that issues had been solved did not mean access was restored for everyone. |
| November 27, 2024 | Microsoft said access and streaming problems had been resolved and distribution-layer capacity increased. The team reported service reliability above 99.999%. | This was Microsoft’s dated reliability claim, not an independent measurement or a live status reading. |
| November 28, 2024 | Microsoft said server-connectivity problems experienced by many players during the first days after launch had been resolved. It repeated the greater-than-99.999% reliability figure. | The update described the company’s view of the launch recovery as of that date. |
Neumann’s November 21 forum post put the continuing disruption plainly: “We continue to see access and bandwidth issues as more users come online globally.”

Were add-on problems part of the server outage?
Not necessarily. Microsoft separately described compatibility problems with some third-party add-ons, including non-aircraft content from the MSFS 2020 marketplace. The team said this content could cause long loading times or crashes, and in some cases prevent players from entering the simulator. It temporarily deactivated MSFS 2020 non-aircraft content while investigating and said it planned user controls and a safe boot option.
Those add-on issues should not be conflated with the overloaded service Microsoft identified as the cause of launch-period delays and errors. The updates describe distinct problems that arose around the same period.

What should players take from the launch updates?
- Microsoft’s initial explanation was an overloaded service handling requests for new game systems, not a specifically identified hardware failure or a fully detailed infrastructure root cause.
- The company’s November 20 apology came before its November 21 confirmation that access and bandwidth problems were continuing.
- Microsoft reported access and streaming recovery on November 27, then said first-days connectivity issues were resolved on November 28. Both are historical company statements, not a current service check.
- The updates do not establish an independently verified count of affected players or the size of the launch traffic spike.
