Choose a browser-based service if structured lessons and puzzle practice matter more than having a standalone program. The listed features describe what the publishers offer; they are not independent evidence that one product improves memory or problem-solving more than another.
Can chess games improve memory and problem-solving?
Chess-position memory is not the same as general memory
Chess expertise is associated with remembering meaningful chess positions, a specialized ability that draws on chess knowledge. That finding does not establish that playing a chess game improves everyday memory, prevents memory decline, or protects against dementia. What a school-age study measured
A 2017 study reported an experiment involving 233 third- and fourth-grade students who received 25 hours of chess instruction and were tested on mathematical problem-solving. These figures describe the study’s participants and instruction—not a measured amount of cognitive improvement, and not a test of commercial PC chess games. Why broad claims need caution
A meta-analysis of chess and cognitive transfer notes that the underlying studies did not combine ideal pre- and post-testing, full random assignment, and both inactive and active control groups. Those limitations make confident claims that chess training broadly causes improvements in other abilities difficult to support.
