What happened to the Until Dawn remake studio?
Ballistic Moon developed the 2024 remake of Until Dawn for PS5 and PC, released in October 2024, according to Game Developer. The company’s legal status is now clear: Companies House lists a Final Gazette entry dated 3 February 2026, described as “dissolved via voluntary strike-off.”

That filing confirms the company’s dissolution, not the precise date its day-to-day studio operations ended. In March 2025, Insider Gaming described Ballistic Moon as “effectively closed,” while noting that no official closure announcement had been made at that point. The legal dissolution came later.
Ballistic Moon dissolution and layoff timeline
- September 2024: Ballistic Moon announced it had to significantly scale down its team after developing Until Dawn for PS5 and PC. Its statement did not give a number of affected employees, as reported by Game Developer.
- October 2024: The Until Dawn remake was released.
- December 2024: Insider Gaming later reported that around 20 more developers were laid off, citing anonymous sources.
- 5 November 2025: Companies House records an application to strike the company off the register.
- 11 November 2025: The register records the first Gazette notice for voluntary strike-off.
- 3 February 2026: The Final Gazette entry records the company as dissolved.
Note that Companies House dates the strike-off application to 3 November 2025, not 5 November; the registry’s filing history is the primary record for these entries.

How many people did Ballistic Moon lay off?
The studio did not publish a headcount in its September 2024 scale-down statement. In a report published on 5 March 2025, Insider Gaming cited multiple anonymous sources for estimates of roughly 40 employees let go in September and around 20 additional developers in December. These are reported estimates, not company-confirmed totals; the cited sources do not establish a definitive number of employees affected.
What did Ballistic Moon say about the scale-down?
In its September 2024 statement, quoted by Game Developer, the studio said: “We at Ballistic Moon are confronted with some difficult realities. It is with deep regret and a heavy heart that we must make the tough decision to significantly scale down our team to secure the future of our studio. This comes after our development of Until Dawn for PS5 and PC.”

The statement added that the team remained focused on supporting the game’s launch and was “committed to exploring new opportunities and collaborations for the future.” The later strike-off filing establishes the company’s legal status, but it does not explain what changed or why the company was dissolved.

The public information cited here does not establish a financial, commercial, or other reason for the dissolution. Nor does it include a public explanation from Ballistic Moon leadership or Sony. Game Developer reported that it contacted the company and PlayStation for clarification; the Companies House filing records the strike-off, not the rationale behind it.
