There are 47 regular hairstyles: 8 available at the start, 6 more in character customization at a mirror or vanity, 26 from four Nook Miles hairstyle packs, and 7 taught by Harriet. The 26 kiosk styles are split among Pop, Cool, Stylish, and Fab packs. Nookipedia counts bed head as a separate hairstyle, bringing the broader total to 48. The count of 47 treats bed head as a special appearance rather than a regular selectable style. How to change your hairstyle or hair color
- Get access to a mirror or vanity. These furniture items let you open character customization.
- Interact with the mirror or vanity and choose the hairstyle and hair color you want from the available options.
- Confirm your choices to apply the new look.
Nintendo’s game-start instructions confirm that appearance can be changed after play begins and state, “All character features (like hairstyles) are available regardless of which picture you choose.” The opening choice therefore does not lock you into a hairstyle or other character features. How to unlock the additional hairstyles and colors
Use character customization for six more hairstyles
Once you can use a mirror or vanity, character customization makes six additional hairstyles available beyond the eight initial choices. A mirror can be obtained in-game; the Nintendo instructions confirm later appearance changes but do not specify a particular way to acquire one.

Redeem Nook Miles for kiosk packs
Visit the Nook Stop terminal and open Nook Miles Redemption to find the Pop, Cool, Stylish, and Fab hairstyle packs, as well as the Stylish Hair Colors pack. Each pack is a separate unlock. Learn seven styles from Harriet
After Harriet is available at Harv’s Island, visit her for a hairstyle lesson. iMore reports that she teaches one new style per visit/day. Once learned, a Harriet style can be selected at any mirror or vanity; Harriet is not the only place to use it. Nintendo’s 2.0 update explainer says, “Once Harriet teaches you a new hairstyle, you can choose it whenever you want at a vanity or mirror.”

Use the 47 total when you mean standard hairstyle options, and 48 when bed head is included as a hairstyle.
