For more FPS in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, reduce rendering work first: lower resolution or resolution scale, then reduce shadows and global illumination. If your GPU supports an upscaler, compare DLSS or FSR modes and watch for image blur or ghosting. There is no single best preset for every PC, so use the in-game FPS counter and tune against the same scene.
Best starting settings for more FPS
Use this sequence as a starting point, not a universal preset. Change one or two options, exit and restart the game, then compare FPS in the same scene. Bethesda’s graphics settings guide says lower quality improves performance and identifies resolution, resolution scale, shadows, global illumination, and upscaling as relevant options.
- Lower resolution or resolution scale. If the GPU is limiting performance, reducing the number of pixels it renders can improve FPS, with a trade-off in image detail. Try a modest reduction first and check whether the result remains clear on your display.
- Reduce shadow quality and global illumination. Bethesda specifically names these as settings to lower when seeking more FPS. Lower settings can make lighting and shadows less detailed, so adjust them in steps.
- Try a lower overall quality preset. Move from Ultra to High, then Medium or Low if you still need more headroom. Bethesda says lower quality increases performance overall, but the individual options do not all have the same cost or visual impact. Texture quality uses video memory; shadows also require processing resources.
- Test an upscaler if your hardware offers one. Compare DLSS or FSR at Quality, Balanced, and faster modes. Faster modes may improve FPS but can reduce image clarity. Bethesda’s menu also lists XeSS; support depends on hardware and settings. Bethesda says DLSS and FSR can significantly improve FPS by rendering at a lower resolution and upscaling.
Once you have found a useful balance, check texture, view distance, foliage, effects, and other quality options individually. Their effect depends on the PC and the scene; lowering everything at once makes it harder to see which change helped and what visual detail you gave up.
Use the FPS counter, frame cap, and V-Sync deliberately
Turn on the in-game FPS display to compare changes rather than relying on how a scene feels. Repeat the comparison in the same location, since different scenes can produce different results.

If uncapped FPS swings widely, try a frame-rate cap. Bethesda describes the cap as a way to improve frame pacing and stability; it does not increase the system’s rendering capacity. V-Sync synchronizes output to the monitor’s refresh rate to reduce screen tearing, so choose it for display behavior rather than as an FPS boost.
What the published RTX 4070 benchmark can—and cannot—tell you
PCGamesN’s guide, updated August 15, 2025, reported results from a system with an Intel Core i7-11700F, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 12GB, 32GB DDR4-3200, an MSI B560 motherboard, and Windows 11. It used CapFrameX for capture and says its testing covers 1920×1080 and 2560×1440. On its High profile with DLSS Quality and Frame Generation enabled, it reported 99 average FPS, 37.9 FPS for 1% lows, and a 19.4 FPS minimum. On the Ultra default profile, it reported 74.4 average FPS, 24.6 FPS for 1% lows, and a 4.9 FPS minimum. See PCGamesN’s settings guide for its test context.

Those figures are specific to PCGamesN’s test system and settings, not a prediction for another PC. Its guide also reports ghosting with FSR and DLSS in its tested setup and recommends High over Ultra for more stable lows. Treat those as observations from that setup, not universal findings; compare average FPS, 1% lows, and image clarity on your own hardware.
Check your PC against Bethesda’s requirements
Bethesda’s current PC system requirements list an SSD as required and specify these minimum and recommended tiers. They are requirements, not benchmark results or a guarantee of a particular frame rate.

Bethesda notes that “Performance scales with better hardware.” Meeting the minimum tier does not establish what FPS to expect; resolution, graphics options, scene, drivers, and other system factors also matter.

If performance remains poor, Bethesda’s low-FPS troubleshooting guidance recommends checking system requirements, updating graphics drivers, and closing unnecessary background applications. Its performance guidance also points to these checks:

- Disable overlays that may interfere with the game.
- On a laptop, confirm the game is using the discrete GPU rather than integrated graphics.
- Use a high-performance power profile when plugged in.
- Consider restoring auto-detected graphics settings if manual changes have made performance worse.
After changing graphics settings, exit and restart the game before judging the result. If you are still below your target, continue adjusting settings one or two at a time and compare the same scene.
