That is a useful snapshot, not an official or universal verdict: the best Nightfarer changes with expedition depth, team coordination and how much execution a player wants. For a first run, Wylder is a practical all-rounder; choose Ironeye if you prefer ranged play and weak-point support.
Nightfarer tier list: best picks for Depth 5 random trios
This ranking follows AFK Journal’s September 20, 2026 update, which summarizes a player’s ranking for Depth 5 trios with random teammates. AFK Journal says the player had more than 1,870 hours in the game and at least 100 games on every character. That experience is context for the opinion, not a class win-rate or proof that one Nightfarer performs best for everyone.

| Tier | Nightfarers | Why they land here in this ranking |
|---|---|---|
| S | Ironeye, Wylder, Executor, Duchess | Reliable ranged contribution, adaptable mobility and survival, a powerful deflection ceiling, or damage amplification and evasive utility. |
| A | Recluse, Revenant, Raider, Undertaker | Strong kits whose contribution can depend more on execution, team support, favorable equipment or passives. |
| B | Guardian, Scholar | Useful defensive or enabling roles, but less solo carry potential in this particular random-trio ranking. |
These tiers describe one mode and difficulty, not an official FromSoftware list. AFK Journal places Raider in S tier at Depth 3 and below, and Revenant and Guardian in S tier for coordinated premade teams. The source also notes disagreement among players. No official class win-rate, pick-rate or comparable performance dataset is established in the cited material.
What makes a Nightfarer a good pick?
Nightreign’s three-day expedition loop affects class value: teams make quick choices about where to explore, collect loot, defeat enemies and level up at Sites of Grace before facing stronger nightly enemies and the Nightlord. A kit that looks exceptional on paper may contribute differently depending on the expedition’s preparation, teammates and equipment.

#1 Best Overall
- Elden Ring: Nightreign - Seekers Edition /PS5
- Team contribution: Damage matters, but so do weak-point creation, buffs, enemy control, healing, rescue and revives.
- Consistency: Some characters bring reliable value from their core skills; others benefit more from a favorable weapon, passive or Relic.
- Survival: Evasion, guarding, damage reduction and recovery tools can keep a run alive after a mistake.
- Execution: Aiming, timing deflections, managing affinity residues and positioning all affect how much a kit delivers.
- Mode and depth: Solo play, random matchmaking, coordinated teams and expedition difficulty can change what a group needs.
Which Nightfarer should you choose?
For a first character: Wylder
Bandai Namco’s gameplay guide describes Wylder as balanced and easy to handle, making him a sensible entry point if you want a flexible fighter rather than a demanding specialty. Claw Shot can pull some enemies or draw Wylder toward targets; Onslaught Stake is a powerful explosive attack; Sixth Sense can let him cheat death once before its restoration conditions apply. AFK Journal also places him in S tier for its stated Depth 5 random-trio context.
For ranged play and team support: Ironeye
Ironeye suits players who would rather create openings at range than stay in the thick of a fight. Marking creates a temporary weak point that can stagger an enemy, while Single Shot pierces enemies, terrain and structures. Eagle Eye also improves item discovery for allies. His ranged consistency and team utility help explain his S-tier placement in the cited ranking.
Rank #2
- Additional DLC content will be added after the launch of the game. Release date and further details will be announced in the future.
- ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN is a standalone adventure within the ELDEN RING universe, crafted to bring a new gaming experience
- Take command of uniquely skilled heroes, each possessing their own abilities and distinct flair. While individually powerful, their skills grow even more formidable when united as a team.
- Overcome a relentless environmental threat that sweeps through a land that changes between each game session and defeat the magnificent boss of that night!
- Statue of Wylder - A perfect replica of the nomadic warrior, Wylder, a lone swordman in pursuit of the Night Lord. Crafted by Pure Arts. Size : 25cm
For a high-skill challenge: Executor
Executor’s Cursed Sword is built around deflecting attacks and building toward stronger sword strikes, so his ceiling depends on timing and reading enemies. His Ultimate transforms him into a beast, and Tenacity rewards cleansing status ailments. Players looking for a demanding melee style may find him compelling; the cited ranking places him in S for Depth 5 random trios.
For a coordinated team: reconsider Guardian or Revenant
The random-trio list understates what a dependable group can gain from a defensive or support-heavy character. AFK Journal says both Guardian and Revenant rise to S tier in a coordinated premade, where allies can make better use of protection, summons and recovery support. Raider also rises to S in Depth 3 and below, so the Depth 5 order should not be carried over unchanged to easier expeditions.

Every Nightfarer explained
The base game has eight Nightfarers. The Forsaken Hollows DLC adds Scholar and Undertaker, bringing the scope here to ten. The summaries below describe each kit’s role and tradeoffs, rather than treating a tier as a measure of every play style.
S tier: Ironeye, Wylder, Executor and Duchess
- Ironeye: A ranged archer who marks enemies to expose temporary weak points and can pierce targets and obstacles with Single Shot. Eagle Eye supports the whole party’s item discovery.
- Wylder: A flexible close-range fighter with tools for pulling some enemies or closing distance, an explosive attack, and a once-before-restoration death-avoidance effect.
- Executor: A katana user centered on deflection, with stronger sword attacks built through Cursed Sword; his transformation and status-cleansing reward add other ways to contribute.
- Duchess: A dexterous evasion and rapid-attack specialist. Restage repeats recent damage against nearby foes, Finale obscures the team and can confuse enemies, and Magnificent Pose supports repeated evasive actions at reduced stamina cost.
A tier: Recluse, Revenant, Raider and Undertaker
- Recluse: A spell-focused character who gathers affinity residues and combines them into Magic Cocktail effects. Soulblood Song marks nearby enemies to increase damage they take and restores Recluse’s HP and FP; Elemental Defense lets her gather residue to replenish FP. Resource and residue management are central to making her kit work.
- Revenant: A spirit-focused character whose Summon Spirit calls one of three family spirits. Immortal March supports allies and revives those near death, while Necromancy raises temporary ghosts from enemies. Her support can become more valuable when a coordinated team can capitalize on it.
- Raider: A heavy-weapon fighter whose Retaliate reduces incoming damage and can make large enemies recoil. Totem Stela creates a protective aura that boosts nearby allies and blocks arrows; Fighter’s Resolve reinforces retaliation and survival. AFK Journal ranks him more highly at Depth 3 and below than at Depth 5.
- Undertaker (DLC): Trance increases agility and rewards repeated attacks; Loathsome Hex is a fast strike that moves through the air; Confluence can enable another art activation through ally arts or certain enemy attacks. AFK Journal describes a high melee ceiling alongside greater concerns about survivability and dependence on passives.
B tier: Guardian and Scholar
- Guardian: A shield-focused defender. Whirlwind gathers enemies and sweeps away light projectiles; Wings of Salvation can rescue allies and create a protective area. Steel Guard improves guarding but prevents running while the shield is raised. AFK Journal’s lower placement reflects solo carry potential in random trios, not an absence of team value.
- Scholar (DLC): An enabler with Analyse, which studies enemies and can progress faster by examining different specimens, special notes and allies. Communion links enemies to share damage and can heal linked allies; Bagcraft lets him carry and improve items. His value is tied to what the team can do with those tools.
How recent balance changes affect this list
The latest official balance pass identified by AFK Journal as moving the meta is patch 1.03.2, released January 15, 2026. Bandai Namco’s notes document changes across several characters: Guardian gained defenses and Guard Boost; Raider received attack-speed and movement adjustments for some large weapons, a low-HP attack boost through Fighter’s Resolve, and greater Totem Stela range; Revenant’s spirits gained attack power; and Executor received changes to Cursed Sword deflections, critical hits, guard, stagger, stamina behavior and beast attacks. Bow-related Relic effects were also adjusted.
That does not mean the game stopped receiving updates in January. The official Nightreign site lists Hotfix 1.03.5, dated March 31, 2026. The cited tier-list article characterizes 1.03.2 as the last balance pass to move the meta, while the later hotfix is evidence of subsequent game updates. Check the official patch notes for any newer balance changes before relying on a tier list for a particular patch.
Quick Recap
How to use the ranking without picking the wrong class
- Start with your preferred combat style. Choose Wylder for a flexible start, Ironeye for ranged pressure, or Executor if learning attack timing is part of the appeal.
- Think about what your group lacks. A premade can build around Guardian’s protection or Revenant’s support; random teammates may benefit more from a character who can contribute consistently without coordination.
- Match the tier list to the expedition. Raider’s reported rise at lower depths is a reminder that a Depth 5 ranking is not a universal ordering.
- Reassess when the game is patched. Balance changes can alter character strengths; the official site’s latest-news listing and patch notes are more reliable for update status than an undated tier chart.
