For a first playthrough, however, early availability matters: Wolf Guai: Red Tides is a strong offensive choice you can get in Chapter 1. There is no official universal tier list; the most useful form depends on your progress, enemy matchup, and whether you need damage, defense, or control.
How transformations work
Transformations are spells that temporarily put the Destined One into a combat form with its own moves, health, and Might gauges. Might declines over time, while incoming damage reduces the form’s health; depleting either returns you to monkey form. Equip a transformation at a shrine through Self-Advance / Set Spells. This is different from a Spirit: a Spirit provides a single creature skill rather than a manually controlled form with a separate health bar. The ranking below is an editorial judgment about practical value across a normal progression run—not a developer ranking or a controlled damage test. It weighs availability, survivability, pressure, mobility, and how narrowly a form depends on a particular matchup. Optional and late-game unlocks are ranked with their access cost in mind.
Best transformations ranked
1. Macaque Chief: Umbral Abyss — best all-around balance
Unlocked after completing Chapter 3, Umbral Abyss combines longer reach, frost buildup, and ways to close distance. That mix makes it a flexible choice when you want to keep pressure on enemies without relying on a single defensive gimmick. It is not available early, but among the later forms it has a persuasive general-purpose role. PCGamesN’s guide highlights its reach and gap-closing options.

2. Wolf Guai: Red Tides — best early offensive pick
Defeat Guangzhi in Chapter 1 to unlock Red Tides. Its repeated light attacks build Scorch Bane, giving it a useful offensive role very early in the campaign. Fire pressure can suit bosses vulnerable to it, but the matchup matters: PCGamesN cautions that using fire against Black Bear Guai can make that fight harder by enraging the boss. Red Tides is an excellent early option, not a form to use indiscriminately.
3. Yellow Loong: Golden Lining — best counter-focused late-game form
Golden Lining is a Chapter 4 reward after the Loong-related encounters. Its See Through counter mechanic gives it a high-skill, reactive identity, and Shock immunity is valuable when that bane is a threat. The demanding unlock means it is a late-game specialist rather than a practical recommendation for most of a first run.

4. Rock Guai: Azure Dust — best defense against status banes
Complete the Man-in-Stone side quest in Chapter 2 to obtain Azure Dust. Its transformation trait grants immunity to all four status-effect banes, making it the clearest choice when ailments are the main problem. Its slower pace limits its appeal as an all-purpose damage pick, so equip it for protection rather than expecting the fastest pressure.
5. Yin Tiger: Ebon Flow — best for deflection and deliberate play
After reaching the Painted Realm, defeat Yin Tiger to gain Ebon Flow. Its kit includes a deflection move and a mobility state that consumes Focus. Those tools reward timing and can suit players comfortable with its slower attacks; players seeking immediate, uncomplicated pressure may prefer another form.

6. Monk from the Sea: Hoarfrost — best for frost and area control
Defeat the Chapter 3 miniboss Monk from the Sea to unlock Hoarfrost. Its attacks apply Frost Bane, while Ice Sheet creates an area that supports further attacks. That makes it a useful status and space-control option when enemies stay within its area, rather than a universal answer to every encounter.
7. Horse Guai: Dark Thunder — useful thunder specialist, but quest-sensitive
Dark Thunder is tied to Ma Tianba’s quest across multiple chapters. The form has Thunder immunity and thunder-inflicting attacks, giving it a clear niche against relevant threats. Its progression is easy to mishandle: advancing the final step prematurely can cause the quest to be missed, so follow the quest through its stages before moving on.

8. Worm Guai: Violet Hail — poison specialist with a risky setup
Violet Hail comes from an optional Chapter 4 secret area. It is immune to poison and can apply poison, but its damage loop involves wounding itself, deploying larvae, and recovering. That setup and self-risk mean its poison output is not unconditional; it is better suited to players willing to manage the cycle than anyone looking for effortless damage.
9. Rat Guai: Ashen Slumber — early-to-midgame fire option with a costly burst
Ashen Slumber is a side-quest reward involving the rat NPC and Third Rat Prince across Chapters 2 and 3. It builds Scorch Bane and has a charged flame attack, plus a burst that ends the transformation. The burst gives it a distinct way to spend the form, but the transformation-ending cost makes timing important.

10. Stone Monkey: Azure Dome — strongest endgame specialty
Azure Dome is a secret-ending reward. It offers broad defensive traits and lets you cast equipped spells while transformed, giving it an unusually versatile endgame role. Because it requires the secret ending, it is not a realistic choice for most of an initial playthrough; rank it as a reward for later experimentation, not an early-game recommendation. Unlock timing changes the ranking
A transformation that is excellent on paper cannot help before you obtain it. Red Tides is the practical early recommendation; Azure Dust becomes available through Chapter 2 side content; several forms with broader tools arrive in or after Chapter 3; and Violet Hail, Golden Lining, and Azure Dome depend on late, optional, or secret content. If you are choosing a form for your current run, prioritize the best tool you have unlocked for the next boss rather than chasing a late-game ranking.
The guides describe forms as situational tools, not fixed upgrades. In particular, elemental pressure can be a liability when it triggers a boss response, as fire can in the Black Bear Guai encounter. There is no established numeric damage ranking in the cited guides, so these placements should be read as practical role comparisons rather than precise performance measurements.
