What Sony’s 1.5 million figure measures
Sony Group’s FY25 Q4 Supplemental Information lists ASTRO BOT as a PlayStation 5 game with 1.5 million global cumulative sell-through units as of November 3, 2024. Sony’s table gives the US release date as September 6 and marks the milestone as reached after 58 days.

The table describes the figures as estimated first-party software sell-through through Sony Interactive Entertainment and excludes add-on content. It does not label the figure as shipments, revenue, or paid-only sales. Nor does it establish a current lifetime total.
How the nine-week report fits
In Sony Group’s November 11, 2024 Q2 FY2024 results-call transcript, management said the game had sold “over 1.5 million copies” in nine weeks. That wording is consistent with the supplemental table’s more precisely dated 1.5 million milestone: the statements use different reporting contexts and levels of precision, not necessarily different measures of the same exact day.

The transcript also said 37% of purchasers had not bought a Sony first-party title in the previous two years. That describes prior purchase behavior; it is not a count of new PlayStation owners. The transcript is reproduced by ROIC AI.

The figures document a strong early sales milestone for ASTRO BOT, but they do not by themselves establish the game’s profitability, revenue, sales rank, or why buyers chose it. Sony’s supplemental table and the results-call remarks also do not provide a later lifetime total.

At launch, Team ASOBI Studio Director Nicolas “Nico” Doucet described the game’s ambition as “the continuation of Astro’s Playroom, going to the big stage and elevating Astro to becoming a character we could be proudly presenting next to the amazing franchises from PlayStation Studios.” In the same official launch interview, he said he wanted “as many people as possible” to enjoy the title, including existing and first-time gamers. Sony Interactive Entertainment published the interview on September 6, 2024.
