The best co-op game for a couple depends on the kind of time you want to share: a focused two-player story, a puzzle that rewards talking things through, a relaxed world to revisit, or a lively test of coordination. These nine picks cover those different moods; they are recommendations by fit, not a definitive ranking or a claim of comparative testing.

For a shared story and two-player adventure

It Takes Two

Best for: A pair looking for a campaign designed around cooperation, with both players involved throughout. Electronic Arts describes it as a journey “built purely for two,” playable in couch co-op or online through Friend’s Pass. The protagonists, Cody and May, are a struggling couple, so expect a relationship-centered story rather than an uncomplicated romantic fantasy. For online play, EA says one player must own the full game for the other to join; check the current platform-specific requirements on the official It Takes Two page.

Split Fiction

Best for: Couples who want a newer, varied adventure that moves between science-fiction and fantasy settings. Its split-screen design gives the two players different abilities and challenges to tackle together. EA describes it as tailored for two and lists crossplay among PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, as well as Friend’s Pass. One player must own the full game to invite the other through Friend’s Pass; check EA’s current Split Fiction page for supported combinations and requirements before choosing a platform.

A Way Out

Best for: Two players who want a cinematic escape story with changing activities rather than one repeated mechanic. Its two protagonists have to cooperate as the situation develops, and its split-screen presentation keeps both characters in view. GameSpot includes it among its co-op recommendations, but platform and online-play details can vary by edition; confirm the version you plan to play before buying.

For a calmer game to return to

Stardew Valley

Best for: Couples who want an ongoing shared project rather than a short, tightly scripted campaign. For a high-energy coordination challenge

Overcooked! 2

Best for: Players who enjoy fast decisions, noisy teamwork, and laughing when a plan goes sideways. The kitchen’s deadlines make coordination the point, but that pressure can make it a poor first pick if either person gets tense when a game puts them on a timer. Treat it as a taste-dependent choice, not a universally safe couples game.

Pikmin 3 Deluxe

Best for: Couples who enjoy cute strategy, environmental puzzles, and planning together at a less frantic pace than a deadline-driven kitchen. GamesRadar+ describes its cooperative story mode as a joint-planning experience, making it a good fit for players who like considering their next move together.

How to choose a game you will both enjoy

  • Decide whether you want an ending or a routine. A story campaign can make a satisfying project over a few evenings; a persistent world such as Stardew Valley gives you somewhere to return together.
  • Match the pressure to both players. A puzzle or farm offers a different pace from Overcooked! 2’s deadlines. If one person dislikes time limits, pick a lower-pressure game first.
  • Look for meaningful roles for both players. In It Takes Two, abilities change with the levels, and progress depends on working together. That can help an experienced player and a newer one both stay involved.
  • Choose local or online play before settling on a title. It Takes Two supports couch and online co-op; Split Fiction offers split-screen and online Friend’s Pass. Do not assume another game supports the same setup.
  • Check the exact platform combination. EA lists crossplay for Split Fiction across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. That does not establish crossplay for the other games here, so verify the relevant edition before planning a long-distance session.
  • Confirm copies, accounts, and requirements. Friend’s Pass is available for It Takes Two and Split Fiction, but EA’s pages describe ownership, installation, account, or internet conditions. Check the current terms for the platform you intend to use; local and online play may have different requirements.

Source and scope

This is a selection by play style, not a measured ranking: the supporting coverage comes from editorial lists by GameSpot, GamesRadar+, and Press Start Co, alongside EA’s official product information for its two games. The available platform coverage is not exhaustive for every title or edition, and these recommendations are not presented as hands-on test results.
