The right PS5 multiplayer game depends on how your group gets together: in the same room, online, as teammates, or head-to-head. For couch sessions, try Overcooked! All You Can Eat, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, or EA SPORTS FC 26; for online squad play, Helldivers 2 supports up to four players. Check each game’s specific mode and player limit before you invite the group.
Best PS5 multiplayer games for the same-room couch
Local multiplayer is the simplest fit when everyone is together, but player limits and modes vary. PlayStation’s local multiplayer guide lists the following options and player counts (accessed October 2, 2026). You may need an extra controller for additional players; PlayStation’s guide specifically suggests using an extra DualSense controller for local play.

PS5 games to play with friends online
Helldivers 2 for cooperative squad play
Helldivers 2 is an online co-op shooter for PS5 and PC, with up to four online players—one player can team up with up to three friends. PlayStation’s support FAQ confirms PS5-to-PC cross-play. On PS5, online play requires an internet connection and PS Plus. The FAQ says the game has no offline or single-player mode, so it is not a fit for a group that needs solo or offline play. - Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
- An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself

For other online games, verify the current regional store listing for supported modes, cross-play, and any subscription requirements. The requirement above applies to Helldivers 2 on PS5; it should not be assumed to apply identically to every game.
Fortnite split-screen: useful, but mode-specific
PlayStation lists two-player split-screen for Fortnite Battle Royale in Duos and Squads. Its guide notes that split-screen also extends to certain other modes supporting Duos and Squads, not every mode in the game. Confirm that your chosen mode supports split-screen before setting up a couch session.

How to choose the right game for your group
- Decide where everyone will play. Local play means sharing a display and having the controllers the mode requires. Online play needs compatible online functionality and may carry account or subscription requirements.
- Pick cooperation or competition. Overcooked! All You Can Eat and Helldivers 2 are cooperative examples; Gran Turismo 7 is listed for local competition. Fortnite Duos and Squads pair team play with battle royale competition.
- Match the player cap to the group. PlayStation lists two local players for Gran Turismo 7, compared with 2–4 for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Check the specific mode’s limit rather than relying on a general multiplayer label.
- Choose a genre everyone wants to play. The examples span racing, football, cooking, wave survival, battle royale, and squad shooting; the best fit is the one your group will enjoy together.
- Check the current listing before buying or launching. Regional editions, supported modes, player caps, cross-play, and online requirements can change or differ. Use the game’s current PlayStation Store page or official support page for the details that matter to your session.
Other couch co-op games to check
PlayStation Direct’s couch co-op collection also includes It Takes Two, Split Fiction, Diablo IV, and Stardew Valley. Their inclusion makes them worth investigating, but the collection alone does not establish each game’s exact player count, split-screen setup, or current requirements. Check the individual store listing for the edition and mode you intend to play. PlayStation Direct couch co-op collection.
