A March 2023 report described a Saturn motherboard-based build and showed TZMWX demonstrating games on it. That establishes that the prototype could run games in a demo, but not that it was tested for broad compatibility or is available to buy.
What the Sega Uranus is
TZMWX built the Uranus by adapting Sega Saturn hardware into a handheld form. GameSpot reported on the project and its gameplay demonstration on March 16, 2023, reproducing the modder’s caption, “URANUS” prototype. GameSpot’s report describes a chunky device with a shape reminiscent of a Sega Game Gear and a three-button layout inspired by the Saturn controller.
The Uranus is distinct from TZMWX’s earlier SegaStation project. March 2023 coverage discusses the Saturn motherboard trimming involved in the Uranus build, but neither project is presented in those reports as a commercial product. Time Extension’s coverage and Tom’s Hardware’s coverage provide additional context on the build and its relationship to SegaStation.
Can you play Sega Saturn games on it?
Yes, the reported prototype was demonstrated running games. GameSpot says the device’s directory included Resident Evil, Sega Rally, and Street Fighter II, and describes TZMWX showing several games. This is evidence of a working demonstration, not a compatibility audit: the report does not establish how many Saturn games run, how well they perform, or whether every feature works.

Reported hardware and specifications
GameSpot’s March 16, 2023 report listed the following components and specifications. These are reported build details, not independently measured test results.
| Part or specification | What the report lists |
|---|---|
| Base hardware | Sega Saturn motherboard |
| Disc replacement | Fenrir ODE |
| Cartridge | 4M memory and 4M EXRAM |
| Display | 3.5-inch, 640 × 480 IPS LCD |
| Battery | Two 18650 cells |
| Stated runtime | “>3 Hours,” as reported by GameSpot; not independently tested in the article |
The display and battery figures describe the reported specification rather than verified screen quality or endurance. The coverage does not establish measured thermals, long-term reliability, or performance across the Saturn library.

The cited March 2023 reports describe a custom prototype and its build, not a product listing, turnkey kit, or documented set of instructions for reproducing it. They do not establish whether TZMWX later completed, revised, or commercialized the project. A Saturn donor console is relevant because the build uses a Saturn motherboard, but buying a donor console alone does not provide a Uranus kit or a ready-made portable.
The reported parts list can help explain the project’s design, but the coverage does not verify current component availability, compatibility for a new build, or current prices. Reproducing a console conversion would also require custom hardware work; the reports do not provide a complete, validated build procedure.
