There is no confirmed Back to the Future game announcement or release plan in Bob Gale’s reported comments. On February 8, 2025, the franchise co-creator said the team had “a shot at” a new game, then cautioned that he could not share more and added, “Knock on wood that it will happen.” That describes a possibility, not a greenlit game.
What Bob Gale said about a new game
Insider Gaming reported Gale’s comments from an interview with Cleveland.com. Gale said, “We’ve got a shot at a new video game based on Back to the Future.” He also said, “I don’t want to tell you any more than that because I’m not allowed to, but this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” and “Knock on wood that it will happen.” Insider Gaming’s February 8, 2025 report presents the remarks as a hopeful possibility; they do not establish that development has been formally approved or that a game will be released.
What is—and is not—confirmed
Gale’s remarks do not identify a title, developer, publisher, genre, platform, format, or release window. They also do not say whether the possible game would tell a new story or continue an earlier game. No specific game can therefore be assessed for editions, availability, or preorders on the basis of these comments.
The comments were made in the context of the original film’s 40th anniversary in 2025. The anniversary is context, not a launch date or evidence that a game was planned to arrive that year.

Is there a newer status update?
The official Back to the Future news page did not surface an announcement identifying this game project in the results consulted. That absence does not establish that the project was cancelled, nor does it rule out a later update. The status remains unresolved: the reported comments are not a formal announcement, and the available material does not confirm whether the possibility moved forward.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How this differs from the Telltale game
The franchise previously announced a Telltale episodic adventure made with Universal Partnerships & Licensing and Bob Gale. The official announcement described a five-episode game. That is useful historical context, but it is not evidence that a new project is a sequel, uses Telltale, or shares the earlier game’s format or team. The older announcement is available in the official franchise archive, with episode details in a separate official episode announcement.
