Itch.io’s adult-content policy lists themes the platform says it cannot support for sale, including non-consensual sexual content, underage themes, incest, bestiality, rape and coercion, sex trafficking, voyeurism, and certain extreme-harm fetishes. The list is explicitly non-exhaustive, and itch.io says some reviews are handled individually. Its July 2025 response to payment-processor scrutiny also involved deindexing adult content—a different outcome from deleting a game.
What does itch.io’s prohibited-theme list include?
In its Creator FAQ, itch.io describes the list below as a non-exhaustive set of themes present in card-processing networks that it is unable to support for sale. The policy also says that creators who collect money must follow the acceptable-use policies of every payment processor their account uses. Read itch.io’s Creator FAQ.

- Non-consensual content, whether real or implied.

- Incest or pseudo-incest content.

- Rape, coercion, or force-related themes.

The FAQ separately says itch.io does not allow sexualized images or videos of real-life humans, photorealistic AI imagery designed to resemble real people, content that glorifies sexual violence, or sexual depictions of minors, people presented as minors, or suggested minors. Itch.io says it is “almost impossible” to create an exhaustive list of unacceptable products and that content reviews may be handled one case at a time.
What can happen to a game or creator account?
The policy warns that administrative action is permanent and offers no appeal; funds in an account may not be eligible for payout. That warning does not establish that every listed theme is illegal in every jurisdiction, or that every project or creator will receive the same enforcement outcome. Itch.io’s policy is about what it will support for sale on its platform, alongside any applicable processor rules.

Why did itch.io deindex adult content in July 2025?
On July 24, 2025, itch.io said it had deindexed adult NSFW content from browse and search while auditing content after scrutiny from payment processors. It said maintaining payment infrastructure was critical to creators and explained the urgent change as necessary to protect that infrastructure. These were itch.io’s stated reasons; the available statements do not establish the decision or rationale of every processor.
The dispute unfolded amid a campaign by Collective Shout. In an open letter dated July 11, 2025, the group asked payment-company executives to stop processing payments for gaming platforms hosting games it characterized as involving rape, incest, and child sexual abuse. The letter sets out the group’s allegations and demands, not an independent finding about every game or every processor’s actions. Itch.io later said the game No Mercy had been temporarily available on the platform before it was banned in April 2025; Collective Shout described that game as a rape-simulation game. Did itch.io delete adult games or hide them from search?
Deindexing and removal are not the same. In its July 31, 2025 glossary, itch.io described a deindexed project as unavailable through public discovery channels such as search, browse, and recommendations, while still functioning through direct links, libraries, collections, and profile pages. The platform’s updates also said some pages received individual content notices. Ars Technica’s contemporaneous reporting described both deindexing and reported individual page or file removals, so outcomes varied; it would be inaccurate to say that every affected game was deleted or that every buyer lost access.
| Outcome | What it means | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Deindexed | Removed from discovery surfaces such as search, browse, and recommendations; direct links and certain library or profile access could still work. | Itch.io glossary, July 31, 2025: platform update. |
| Individual notice or removal | A page or file may have been subject to an individual content action; this is distinct from the broad deindexing action. | Itch.io updates and contemporaneous Ars Technica reporting, July 2025: Ars Technica. |
What changed after the initial announcement?
Itch.io’s response evolved over the final week of July 2025. The dates matter: these updates describe what the platform said at the time, not a guarantee that every detail remains unchanged.

- July 24: Itch.io announced that adult NSFW content had been deindexed from browse and search during a content audit. Read the update.
- July 28: In an addendum, itch.io said it could not rely on user-provided tags for a sufficiently accurate targeted review and was awaiting final determinations from Stripe and PayPal. It said Stripe payments for 18+ content were suspended at that point. Itch.io also described the platform as having over 2 million product pages; that was the platform’s own July 2025 figure, not an independently audited or current count. Read the addendum.
- July 31: Itch.io said it was reindexing free adult NSFW content and would bring paid content back slowly while discussions with processors continued. It also described a planned content-warning system for NSFW pages seeking indexing. The update relayed Stripe’s position at that time: Stripe was unable to support content “designed for sexual gratification” because of restrictions from its banking partners. That is a dated account from itch.io, not a current determination of Stripe policy. Read the reindexing update.
Can creators still sell adult games on itch.io?
The Creator FAQ’s current policy says adult content is subject to its prohibited-theme rules and, where a creator collects money, the acceptable-use policies of the payment processors used by that account. The July 31, 2025 update said free adult NSFW content was being reindexed while paid content would return gradually amid processor discussions. That update describes the platform’s position then; check the current Creator FAQ and the payment terms applicable to your account before listing or selling a project.
For creators assessing a specific page, distinguish four questions: whether it is indexed for discovery, whether the page or files remain available, whether the project is free or paid, and which itch.io or processor rule applies. A project’s discovery status alone does not tell you whether its files were removed or whether payment processing is available.
