Privacy settings can affect both who appears in search and who can contact you. The menu paths below reflect PlayStation guidance current as of October 7, 2026; labels may change with system updates.
How to add a friend on PS5
- Press the PS button to open the control center, then select Game Base.
- Open Friends and select Search for players. Search by online ID or real name, or look through recent players and friends of friends.
- Select the player’s profile, then choose Add Friend.
- To share your real name and profile picture with that player, select the Close Friends checkbox when sending the request.
PlayStation notes that “Search results may vary depending on a player’s privacy settings.” If someone does not appear, check the spelling of their online ID and consider whether privacy settings limit search visibility. Your own settings can also affect who is allowed to send you a request. Child accounts cannot send or receive Close Friends requests.
How to manage friend requests
Open the Friends area in Game Base to find your friend list and request options. From a player’s profile, you can accept or reject an incoming request. You can also cancel a request you sent if it has not been accepted.
In the PlayStation App, incoming requests are listed under Friends > Requests. To cancel a sent request in the app, open that player’s profile and use the cancellation option.

How to remove a friend
- In Game Base, open the friend’s profile.
- Select … (More).
- Choose Remove from Friends.
Removing someone ends the friend connection; it does not, by itself, block them. The PlayStation App also has a Friends > Remove as Friend option.
How to change who can find or contact you
Privacy controls let you restrict categories of people who can see information or contact you, rather than targeting one particular player. On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy. You can choose a preset privacy profile or review and customize individual controls.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
The controls include who can send friend requests, see your activity or friends, and interact with you through parties, games, and messages. For example, choosing Friends Only for relevant messaging controls limits messages from people outside your friend list. These account privacy settings apply across devices, not only the PS5 console.
How to block and unblock a player
Block a player
- Press the PS button, open Game Base, and select the player from Friends or search for them.
- Open the player’s profile and select … (More).
- Choose Block. You can also select a player from a party’s member list and block them there.
Blocking is more restrictive than removing someone. According to PlayStation, blocked players cannot view one another’s profiles, activity, or personal information, add one another to parties, or watch one another through Share Screen. In a party chat they share, they cannot hear each other’s voice or watch each other’s screen. If another player adds the blocked person to a group, the two blocked players will not see each other’s messages.

Unblock a player
- Open Game Base settings.
- Select Blocked Players.
- Choose the player and select Unblock.
Unblocking does not restore the friendship automatically. Send a new friend request if you want to be friends again.
