What happens when you find one?

Traps do not spawn on Peaceful difficulty.

Approach carefully
If you spot a lone skeleton horse during a storm, treat it as a possible trap rather than a safe mount. Keep your distance until you are ready for the riders; stepping within the 10-block trigger radius can activate the encounter.
Can you increase the odds with a lightning rod?
No. Lightning rods should not be treated as a way to farm skeleton-horse traps: the Minecraft Wiki farming tutorial says lightning strikes on rods do not summon them. The tutorial attributes that design choice to wanting traps to remain rare and exciting rather than appearing routinely around players’ builds.

Does the 10-block radius or timer differ by edition?
Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock stable creator documentation describes configurable skeleton-horse-trap behavior. Its component example uses a 10-block trigger radius and a 900-second duration; an untriggered trap is removed when that configured duration expires. Those are values in a creator-component example, not a universal timer for every naturally spawned trap.
The natural-spawn percentages cited above come from the Minecraft Wiki, while the Microsoft Learn page documents Bedrock creator configuration. The available figures do not establish a fully sourced, current side-by-side natural-spawn probability for Java and Bedrock, so do not assume that the configuration example is a cross-edition survival rule.
