The startup was developing MechaFightClub, an NFT-based fighting game built around mechanical rooster characters. The game was later put into indefinite hibernation in May 2023, and the available evidence does not establish that it has relaunched.
What did Andreessen Horowitz fund?
GeekWire and GamesBeat reported on May 9, 2022, that Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) led Irreverent Labs’ $40 million round. The financing followed a $5 million seed round led by a16z in November 2021, according to GeekWire.
GamesBeat reported that participants in the 2022 round included Solana, Infinity Ventures Crypto, Michael Ovitz, Sonam Kapoor and Capitoria. The reporting describes a financing for Irreverent Labs; it does not establish that the game became commercially successful.
Irreverent Labs CEO Rahul Sood told GeekWire in 2022: “We are raising now because [Andreessen] saw no reason to wait based on our overall traction,” GeekWire reported.

What was MechaFightClub?
MechaFightClub was planned as an online fighting game featuring distinctive mechanical rooster-like characters called mechabots. Contemporary coverage described the project as combining artificial intelligence, 3D art and blockchain-based digital assets.
The original design centered on NFTs issued on Solana and an in-game currency called Nuggets. Players were expected to collect, train and battle with mechabots, trade or sell them, and spend or withdraw Nuggets for use on Solana. That model made digital ownership and trading part of the pitch, rather than limiting character progress and assets to a conventional game account.

Arianna Simpson, an Andreessen Horowitz general partner, described the project to GeekWire in 2022 as “a deep technology company building advanced tech on top of a futuristic mecha-cockfighting game.” GeekWire’s report also characterized the game as “cruelty-free”; the rooster fighters were fictional mechanical characters.
What did the company report in 2022?
GeekWire reported that Irreverent Labs had more than 35,000 registered users and 17 employees at the time. The user figure was reported as a company metric, not an independently verified count of active players.

The same May 2022 coverage said the game was expected to launch later that year and that revenue was expected in July. Those were plans and projections reported at the time, not confirmation that either milestone occurred. GeekWire reported the figures and launch expectations; GamesBeat covered the round and the planned collection, training and battle experience.
Why was the game paused?
In May 2023, Irreverent Labs announced that MechaFightClub was going into indefinite hibernation. CEO and co-founder Rahul Sood told Decrypt: “We don’t see a clear path forward to launch the economy from the U.S.” Decrypt reported that the company cited uncertainty around launching the game’s economy from the United States; this was the company’s stated concern, not a legal determination about the project.

The company also said it would repurchase mechabot NFTs. Its announcement, quoted by Decrypt, said: “It’s time for Sol 4 Cocks: we’re repurchasing your Mechabots and putting MFC into indefinite hibernation. This was a tough decision.” Decrypt reported that Irreverent Labs was pivoting toward an AI model intended to create short-form videos from images. Decrypt’s May 2023 report covers the pause, repurchases and pivot.

The 2022 launch and revenue dates were forecasts, and the May 2023 announcement placed the game in indefinite hibernation. The game’s official domain currently displays an “MFC World Games” landing page with links labelled “Play Fight Club” and “Cluck Drop private preview.” Those labels alone do not verify that the paused MechaFightClub game is playable again, that its original economy has launched, or that a physical product is available. The official site is the source for the current landing-page labels.

For the earlier financing context, GeekWire reported that a16z led Irreverent Labs’ $5 million seed round on November 15, 2021, when the company was presenting an AI-powered character concept. GeekWire’s seed-round report predates the MechaFightClub funding announcement.
