Remedy describes Alan Wake 2 as the studio’s first foray into survival horror. One unscored excerpt on OpenCritic captures the enthusiasm some reviewers have for its ambition. William Hughes, reviewer for The A.V. Club, wrote: “I’m happy it exists, because nobody else is making games so fearlessly at this scale.”

Pacing and gameplay
Some review excerpts question the pacing, and gameplay is not praised as uniformly as the atmosphere and storytelling. OpenCritic excerpts flag glitches and inconsistent PC performance. Metacritic also displays a GamePro Germany excerpt criticizing technical performance on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S: “Alan Wake 2 is a creative, atmospheric story highlight, but from a technical point of view it gives you little nightmares on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.” These are reviewers’ observations, not a fresh platform-by-platform benchmark, and they do not establish how the game performs on every system or software version.

When two reviews reach different conclusions, check what each reviewer emphasizes and which platform they played on. These comparisons help explain why scores can diverge:
- Story and pacing: Does the reviewer enjoy narrative experimentation, or find the structure slow or uneven?
- Horror and combat: Is the review judging atmosphere and survival-horror tension, or expecting more action?
- Technical experience: Which platform and test version does the reviewer discuss? Keep PC observations separate from console criticism rather than assuming they describe the same conditions.
- Edition value: Does the review or buying advice account for the expansions and other extras included in a particular edition?
Which platforms and editions are available?
Remedy’s FAQ, updated October 22, 2024, lists digital availability on PC via the Epic Games Store, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Remedy’s 2024 annual report gives the publication date as October 27, 2023. Availability, prices and retailer stock can change, so confirm the current listing for your region before buying.

The FAQ lists the game digitally for PC through the Epic Games Store and for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The documented physical Deluxe Edition, by contrast, is a console product; Remedy says there is no physical PC release.
Physical Deluxe Edition
Remedy lists physical Deluxe Editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X. The documented contents are the base game, Deluxe items, an Expansion Pass for Night Springs and The Lake House, a reversible cover sleeve and a digital code for Alan Wake Remastered. The code is digital, not a second physical disc, and both expansions require additional downloads. Confirm the exact contents and platform on the retailer’s current listing.

Limited Physical Collector’s Edition
Remedy’s FAQ also documents a Limited Physical Collector’s Edition created by Limited Run Games, with an Angel Lamp replica, Ocean View Hotel keychain and key, Coffee World pin set and artbook. What the sales figure does—and does not—say
Remedy’s 2024 annual report says Alan Wake 2 had sold more than 2 million units by the end of 2024. That gives context for the game’s commercial reach, but sales are not a measure of critical quality and do not settle whether its pacing, gameplay or technical performance will suit you.
