Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ free Version 3.0 update gives returning players several concrete reasons to revisit: a hotel to decorate, separate dream islands to build, an island-wide cleanup option, expanded storage and new collaborations. The strongest hook is Slumber Islands, which let you experiment without tearing up the island you already have. You do not need the paid Switch 2 Edition to access the update.
What’s new in the free Version 3.0 update?
Nintendo lists Version 3.0 as available for Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo UK dates availability to January 15, 2026, while Nintendo Support lists Version 3.0.0 as released January 14, 2026; that one-day difference reflects regional or UTC launch timing. Nintendo UK’s announcement and Nintendo Support’s update information describe the release.
Decorate Kapp’n’s family hotel
A new hotel sits on the dock. You help Kapp’n’s family by decorating themed guest rooms; decorating rooms and completing certain DIY requests earn hotel tickets. Those tickets can be spent in the hotel souvenir shop. It adds a recurring design task to your existing island rather than asking you to leave it for a separate destination.
Build Slumber Islands
With Nintendo Switch Online, you can create up to three Slumber Islands, separate from your main island. Choose an island size and layout, terraform and decorate using items you have already obtained, then invite friends online to work together. Nintendo Support also says you can invite residents from your home island. This is the update’s clearest answer to the familiar return-player problem: wanting a fresh creative project without bulldozing a developed island. See Nintendo’s Slumber Islands and save-data FAQ for the online and island details.
#1 Best Overall
- Build your community from scratch on a deserted island brimming with possibility; Create your personal getaway and customize your character, home, decorations, and even the landscape itself
- Collect materials to construct everything from furniture to tools. Then, use what you create to give your island a personal touch
- Watch as the time of day and seasons match real life—even your hemisphere. Each day holds potential for surprises and discoveries
- Get to know the island residents, garden, fish, decorate, hunt for fossils, and more.
- Show off your paradise – play on the same system with a total of 4 people, or play together online or over local wireless for fun with up to 8 players
Clear clutter and expand storage
Resetti’s cleanup service can clear selected areas or the whole island. Flowers and custom designs can be sent to storage, making it easier to deal with an island that feels overgrown or cluttered after a long absence. Storage also gains two additional upgrades, reaching a maximum of 9,000 slots; trees, shrubs and flowers can be stored. Nintendo describes these changes in its Version 3.0 update overview.
Collect collaboration items
The update adds LEGO items, retro Nintendo items and content tied to select Splatoon and The Legend of Zelda amiibo. Compatibility is selective, not universal: check whether a particular figure or card series is supported before buying one for this content. Nintendo notes that amiibo accessories are sold separately in its update announcement.
Is Version 3.0 enough to make Animal Crossing fun again?
It depends on what made you stop playing. If your island feels finished, Slumber Islands offer a distinct place to start a new design project without resetting your main save. If returning means confronting piles of flowers and clutter, Resetti and the expanded storage address that friction directly. The hotel supplies another decorating activity on the island, while the collaborations offer collectible goals for players who enjoy themed items.
Rank #2
- Share Your Paradise - Show off your island utopia to family and friends - or pack your bags and visit theirs.
- Get Building - Experience a robust new crafting system - collect materials to construct everything from furniture to tools!
- Create Your Perfect Getaway - Craft everything from tools to creature comforts as you create and customize your island community.
- Explore Your Island - Collect bugs, decorate your paradise throughout the day, or enjoy sunset on the beach while fishing in the ocean.
- Play Together - Up to eight players can reside on an island; four residents of the same island can play together simultaneously on a single system.
Those additions are meaningful reasons to check back in, but they are not evidence that every lapsed player will enjoy returning. The update’s appeal is strongest if you want more decorating, experimentation or cleanup; it may be less compelling if you are looking for a fundamentally different kind of game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes the update require a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition purchase?
No. Nintendo describes the hotel, Slumber Islands, cleanup service, storage changes and collaborations as part of the free Version 3.0 update for owners of the game on Switch or Switch 2. The Switch 2 Edition is a separate option with system-specific enhancements: improved resolution, mouse control support for decorating, a megaphone that uses the system microphone, and online sessions of up to 12 players when everyone in the session has the Switch 2 Edition. Those enhancements are separate from the free update’s content, as outlined in Nintendo’s update and edition details.
For someone deciding whether to return, the practical comparison is whether the free update meets their needs or whether the Switch 2 Edition’s controls, resolution and larger online sessions are worth an additional purchase. The paid upgrade is not a prerequisite for Version 3.0.

- Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
- Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.
What should returning players know about online play and saves?
Nintendo Switch Online is required for the described online use of Slumber Islands, including playing there with friends. Nintendo says a Switch or Switch 2 system can have only one main island, even if multiple copies of the game are used. After updating to Version 3.0.0 or later, members can create up to three Slumber Islands. These limits and requirements are detailed in Nintendo Support’s save and Slumber Islands FAQ.
Island backups are separate from ordinary Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud. Animal Crossing’s island-backup feature requires an active membership and must be enabled in the game. If you move to another console, Nintendo says a full island transfer moves the island save data, residents and Slumber Islands; consult the official support FAQ for the applicable transfer and backup information.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How does the hotel compare with Happy Home Paradise?
The hotel and Happy Home Paradise both involve decorating, but they are different activities. The hotel is on your island: you decorate themed guest rooms and earn hotel tickets for its souvenir shop. Happy Home Paradise is a separate expansion centered on designing vacation homes and facilities on an archipelago. Nintendo lists it as available for a separate purchase or through an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership; subscription access ends if that membership ends, unless you own the expansion separately. Check Nintendo’s Happy Home Paradise support FAQ for current terms in your region.
If you want another decorating task woven into your existing island, the hotel is the closer fit. If you want a dedicated vacation-home design mode and its associated archipelago, Happy Home Paradise is a separate option, not part of free Version 3.0.
