Respawn acknowledged in January 2026 that a bad actor could remotely control another Apex Legends player’s inputs, then said the incident had been resolved with help from the community. The statement, reproduced by Gadgets Now, said Respawn’s initial investigation had not found evidence of code installation or execution. The public information does not establish how the exploit worked, how many players were affected, or whether every reported in-game disruption was connected to it.
What happened in Apex Legends?
In January 2026, Respawn said it was investigating an active security incident that allowed a bad actor to control another player’s inputs remotely. That means the confirmed concern was control of actions inside the game—not confirmed access to a player’s computer.
Gadgets Now reproduced Respawn’s initial statement: “We are aware of an active security incident where a bad actor is able to control the inputs of another player remotely in @PlayApex. Based on our initial investigation, we have not identified evidence that suggests the bad actors can install or execute code as in the case of an RCE or injection attack. We are actively working on a solution and will update you when we have more information.”
Hours later, according to the same report, Respawn said the incident was resolved with community help and thanked players for their reports. The precise time from the first reports to the resolution is not established in the available account.

Did hackers take over players’ computers or accounts?
Respawn’s reproduced statement said its initial investigation had not identified evidence that attackers could install or execute code, as in a remote-code-execution (RCE) or injection attack. The incident should therefore not be described as a confirmed PC takeover, malware infection, or account-password breach.
The public statements do not identify the technical cause or disclose whether account access played any role. They also do not establish the affected platforms, the number of players or matches involved, or whether the exploit returned after Respawn’s resolution notice.

What did players report, and what is confirmed?
News coverage described Reddit and X posts from players alleging forced disconnections, characters continuing to move or act without their permission, and usernames changing. The coverage cautioned that it could not confirm whether every community report was connected to the incident Respawn investigated. These accounts are reports, not a verified measure of the exploit’s reach or a technical explanation of how it operated.
No incident-specific count of affected players, confirmed matches, or duration was disclosed in the sources available.

How should you report suspicious behavior?
- Use EA’s Apex player-reporting route. Report the behavior you observed through the official Apex Legends player-reporting page.
- Include concrete match details. Describe what happened and when, and provide relevant match information if available. Separate what you personally saw from what you inferred.
- If in-game reporting is unavailable, use EA Help. EA’s anti-cheat update points players to EA Help for reporting and to its coordinated vulnerability disclosure program for security vulnerabilities or anti-cheat bypasses.
- Avoid publicly accusing a named player based only on posts or unusual gameplay. EA’s rules prohibit abusing exploits or bugs and warn that false claims can lead to action against an account. They also prohibit accessing another player’s account.
Is this the same as other Apex Legends exploits?
No. Public reports describe several different incidents with distinct behaviors; they should not be treated as one continuing character-takeover attack.

Does a VPN, antivirus app, or different controller protect you?
No consumer product is identified as a fix for this incident. The reported issue involved remote control of in-game inputs, and Respawn said its initial investigation had not found evidence of code installation or execution. The available statements do not support buying antivirus software, a VPN, a replacement controller, or other hardware as protection against it.

In an August 21, 2024 anti-cheat update, Electronic Arts said it had banned more than 6 million accounts since Apex Legends launched and averaged more than 100,000 account bans per month. Those are EA’s dated, general anti-cheat figures—not a count of players affected by the January 2026 incident or a current monthly rate.

EA’s rules classify exploiting glitches or bugs as cheating. A separate March 4, 2026 EA update also says unauthorized input-manipulating devices used to automate actions, modify recoil, alter input behavior, or simulate unintended control schemes for an unfair advantage are cheating. That policy statement concerns prohibited player conduct; it does not explain the January incident’s technical cause.
