Apex Legends: How to Fix Network Lag, Stuttering, and Packet Loss

Check FPS, latency, and packet loss together in Apex Legends to identify whether stuttering is tied to frame rate, your connection, or EA’s servers.

Start by turning on Settings > Gameplay > Performance Display. Apex Legends shows FPS, latency, and packet loss together, helping you tell whether a hitch lines up with a frame-rate drop or a network problem. Then check EA’s server status, choose a nearby data center, and test your local connection before changing graphics settings or buying equipment.

Tell network lag from frame-rate stutter

With Performance Display on, watch the indicators while the problem occurs. A drop in FPS points toward a rendering or hardware-performance issue; rising latency or packet loss points toward data traveling between your platform and the game. These are useful clues, not proof of a single cause: a hitch can have more than one explanation.

Latency, commonly called ping, is the round-trip time for game data to travel between your platform and the data center. Packet loss means packets fail to complete that trip. EA’s general Apex guidance describes ping below 50 ms as particularly good, below 100 ms as generally enough to keep the game running well, and above 100 ms as a level where lag may begin. EA also says ping is generally between 50 and 150 ms. These are general guidance figures, not guarantees for every region or a packet-loss threshold. EA’s guide to ping, packet loss, and lag explains the indicators.

Check for a server-side issue

If several data centers show poor results, or the problem affects other players, check EA’s Apex troubleshooting page and official @PlayApex reports for an incident. EA notes that high player load or a server issue can affect data centers. If service is disrupted, home-network changes cannot repair the outage; wait for service to recover.

Select the closest data center

  1. At the Apex launch screen, before selecting Continue, open Data Center in the bottom-left corner.
  2. Choose the location closest to where you are playing.
  3. Check Performance Display again in-game to see whether latency or packet loss changes.

A farther data center means data travels farther and may increase ping and packet loss. EA’s matchmaking guide also describes manually choosing a data center when connection issues occur.

Test your home connection

EA identifies shared Wi-Fi, wireless connections, background applications, and a blocked or distant router as possible contributors. Try these checks before considering new hardware:

  • Pause large household downloads or streams while playing.
  • Close unnecessary background applications, especially on PC.
  • Move the router to a clear, less obstructed location if practical.
  • Connect your platform to the router with Ethernet and compare the in-game indicators.

A wired test can help identify whether local wireless instability is involved. If you need a cable for the test, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one option; EA recommends trying a hardwired connection but does not specify a cable category or promise that buying a new cable will improve performance. Ethernet will not fix an outage, ISP routing or peering problems, or FPS drops. EA’s general connection troubleshooting guide explains why wired connections can be more reliable than wireless.

Restarting a router is not a universal cure. For specific errors such as code:net and code:leaf, EA lists router restart, Ethernet, and restarting the PC or console among the steps. Use the guidance for the error you actually see rather than treating every lag problem as a router fault.

If FPS drops during the hitch, troubleshoot frame rate

When FPS falls at the same time as the stutter, test graphics settings instead of assuming the network is responsible. EA describes around 60 FPS as a standard target for many players, but actual performance depends on the computer and monitor support.

  1. Keep Performance Display visible and note the FPS during the problem.
  2. On PC, lower graphics settings a few at a time, then compare FPS in similar play conditions. EA’s PC settings guide recommends testing changes incrementally rather than assuming one preset fits every system.
  3. If you use an FPS cap, check your PC specifications before changing it. EA documents the PC launch option +fps_max <required frame rate>, but warns that changing the cap can cause performance problems; there is no single cap appropriate for every system. See the Apex FPS guide for its instructions.

Server simulation and the pictures rendered by your PC or console are separate things. Respawn’s developer article puts it plainly: “We don’t speak about FPS (frame per second) when discussing server performance because a server does not display pictures.” A frame-rate problem and a server or network problem can feel similar, but they are not interchangeable. Respawn’s servers and netcode explainer also describes how lag and packet loss can occur along ISP and inter-network paths, beyond what a player can correct with local equipment.

Follow the instructions for the exact error code

If Apex displays an error, use EA’s current error-code guide and follow the steps for that code. For example, EA’s code:clock guidance includes checking server status, testing the internet connection, changing data center, restarting the router, and restarting the platform. Other codes can involve game files, graphics drivers, background applications, or a service-side fix. The code helps narrow the issue; not every error means the internet connection is at fault.
