Astro Bot Review: Does PlayStation Finally Have a Nintendo-Tier Platformer?

Astro Bot makes a persuasive case for top-tier platforming with inventive levels, welcoming challenge and playful DualSense presentation, though its length may disappoint some players.

Astro Bot makes a persuasive case for the comparison—not because it imitates Nintendo, but because its inventive platforming, playful presentation and carefully balanced challenge match the qualities players often mean by “Nintendo-tier.” Sony describes a sprawling PS5 adventure; critics have praised its creativity and charm. The strongest qualification is that the available reviews also point to a relatively short campaign and occasional pacing interruptions from bonus-level discoveries.

Does Astro Bot earn the Nintendo-tier comparison?

As an editorial judgment, “Nintendo-tier” is most useful as shorthand for craft: levels that feel deliberately built, mechanics that keep changing, polish that supports play, and a challenge curve that welcomes newcomers without making completion feel automatic. On those terms, Astro Bot makes a strong case. The Associated Press praised the fresh assortment of running, jumping and punching challenges across its planets, while TIME highlighted creative gameplay and the balance between accessibility and the challenge of completing a planet. Neither source establishes a measurable ranking against Nintendo games, and the comparison is better understood as a description of quality than a brand contest.

That case does not depend on nostalgia alone. Sony framed the game as a celebration of three decades of PlayStation, and familiar characters appear among the rescued bots. Those cameos add recognition and delight, but the platforming needs to work without them—and the critics’ praise of its mechanics gives the comparison a basis beyond fan service. AP writer Lou Kesten called it “the sort of game we used to see more of on the PlayStation, and it’s thoroughly delightful.”

What kind of game is Astro Bot?

Astro Bot is a single-player 3D action platformer from Team ASOBI, part of PlayStation Studios. Its setup is simple: the PS5 mothership is attacked, Astro’s crew is scattered, and Astro travels across planets to rescue bots and rebuild the ship. The PlayStation Store describes a multi-galaxy search for the lost crew, with springy punches, rockets and a giant sponge among the power-ups.

Sony’s official FAQ advertises over 50 planets and 300 bots to rescue. Those are publisher-provided scale figures, not an independently audited count. Their relevance is that the adventure is built around more than reaching an exit: rescuing bots and finding discoveries give players reasons to explore each planet.

How do the levels, mechanics and challenge hold up?

Variety is central to the appeal

The strongest case for top-tier platforming is not simply that there is a lot to collect, but that planets keep introducing fresh ways to run, jump and fight. AP’s year-end review specifically praised the assortment of challenges, while the PlayStation Store highlights power-ups that alter how Astro moves and interacts with the world. TIME likewise singled out creative gameplay. Together, these assessments support the view that mechanical invention—not just a large map or a parade of cameos—is the game’s defining strength.

Approachable does not mean challenge-free

TIME’s review describes a game accessible to new players while still offering a challenge in completing a planet. That distinction matters: a welcoming entry point can coexist with satisfying demands for players who want to finish more than the main route. The available evidence supports that balance as a critical strength, though it does not establish that every player will find the difficulty ideal.

Exploration can affect the pace

TechRadar’s PS5 Pro guide identifies a possible pacing drawback: discovering bonus levels too early can end the current level run. That is a criticism from the guide, not a universal account of how every player experiences the game. The same guide lists the game’s short length as a reason to avoid, so players seeking a long campaign should treat that assessment as a meaningful caveat rather than assume the number of planets guarantees a lengthy adventure.

How does Astro Bot use the DualSense?

Controller feedback is part of the presentation, not just an accessory feature. Sony says the DualSense’s haptics and adaptive triggers represent power-ups and surfaces, including the difference between hard metallic ground and softer, water-like textures. TIME praises the range of controller inputs and sound; TechRadar also notes the trigger and vibration use and audio from the controller speaker. These details help explain why the DualSense is central to the game’s feel, but whether a player enjoys that feedback is a matter of preference.

Sony also describes colorful 4K visuals, 3D audio and rapid transitions enabled by the PS5 SSD. The 4K presentation depends on a compatible display. The game’s controller effects do not require a themed limited-edition pad: Sony announced an Astro Bot Limited Edition DualSense at launch, but its present availability is not established.

What do critics and awards lists say?

The available recognition is positive but should be read for what it is: editorial selection, not a review-score average or sales measure. The Associated Press placed Astro Bot fifth on its 2024 games list, and TIME included it among its 10 best video games of 2024. Those selections reinforce the game’s standing with those outlets, but they do not establish a universal consensus.

Sony’s launch announcement quoted Hermen Hulst, then CEO of SIE’s Studio Business Group, saying: “Astro Bot truly has something for everyone and we are so proud of what Team ASOBI have accomplished.” That is a promotional statement from a company executive, not independent criticism.

Is Astro Bot free, multiplayer, or available on PS4 or PS VR2?

  • Is it free like Astro’s Playroom? No. Sony calls Astro Bot a standalone, full-sized adventure, distinguishing it from Astro’s Playroom. Check the official PlayStation Store listing for current pricing and edition details; no current price is established here.
  • Is it multiplayer? No. It is a single-player game.
  • Is it available for PS4 or PS VR2? No. Sony lists it for PS5; it is not available for PS4 or PS VR2.
  • Are there in-game purchases? Sony says there are no in-game purchases.

Should you play Astro Bot?

If you want a polished, imaginative 3D platformer on PlayStation, Astro Bot is a strong recommendation on the evidence available. Its Nintendo-tier claim rests on the right things: level and mechanic variety, accessible but meaningful challenge, and a presentation built around playful detail. The caveats are also clear: TechRadar flags short length and a possible interruption to level pacing when bonus stages are found early. Its PS5 exclusivity makes the platform requirement straightforward, and its single-player structure suits players looking for a focused platforming adventure rather than a multiplayer game.
