Sometimes. Steam’s rules generally prohibit sexually explicit uploaded images, including screenshots, but make a narrow exception for game content posted in that game’s own Community hub. That exception does not automatically cover profiles, other games’ hubs, or every Steam community space.
Where you post the screenshot matters
| Location | What Steam’s guidance says |
|---|---|
| The game’s own Steam Community hub | Steam says its general restriction on sexually explicit uploaded images does not forbid game content posted in its own game hub. This is the narrow exception for an NSFW gameplay screenshot. Steam Rules and Guidelines. |
| Your profile, another game’s hub, or a different community space | Do not assume the game-hub exception applies. Steam says uploaded content should fit the space where it is posted, and its general restriction remains relevant. Steam Rules and Guidelines. |
What the exception does—and does not—mean
Steam’s user-uploaded-content rules specifically include screenshots among image uploads. They say not to upload inappropriate content, including sexually explicit content, then qualify that rule: “This does not forbid game content posted in its own game hub.” The wording makes both the content and its location important. It is not a blanket permission for adult imagery anywhere on Steam. Steam Rules and Guidelines For Steam: Discussions, Reviews, and User Generated Content.

Steam also prohibits bypassing Mature Content Preferences. Those preferences affect which games and community content players see, so do not use another upload location, label, or presentation to get around them. Steam Rules and Guidelines.
What to do with a borderline screenshot
Steam does not publish a complete visual checklist for what counts as sexually explicit. Its examples are not comprehensive, and it notes that context and subjectivity matter. If the image is borderline, choose the conservative interpretation rather than treating the game-hub exception as automatic approval.
