Yes—the major Greek gods Kratos killed are still treated as dead in the established story. Helios appearing in God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla does not mean he was resurrected: Santa Monica Studio says the encounter is Kratos’s mind representing Helios. New afterlife material for God of War: Laufey has not confirmed the return of any named Greek god.
Did Kratos kill all the Greek gods?
No. PlayStation’s official recap says Kratos killed “many” of the Greek gods during his life as the God of War; it does not say he killed every Greek deity. The careful answer is that the major gods he killed remain dead in the established story, while the fate of every Greek god is not exhaustively accounted for.

PlayStation’s recap of Kratos’s history also frames the 2018 game and Ragnarök as his new Norse journey. The Greek and Norse settings are distinct mythological worlds, so the games do not establish that their afterlife rules are identical.
Is Helios alive in Valhalla?
Valhalla’s Helios is not presented as proof that the god survived his death or returned to life. In Santa Monica Studio’s retrospective, lead writer Richard Gaubert explains: “Yes, it’s Kratos’ mind representing Helios, Kratos is talking to himself.” The scene lets players hear a perspective associated with the Olympian gods, but it is a mental representation—not a confirmed living Helios or a spirit independently appearing in the story.

- Physical combat over the shoulder free camera brings the action closer than ever combat in God of war is up close frenetic and unflinching. Kratos' Axes powerful, magic and multi faceted is a brutal weapon as well as a versatile tool for exploration
- Midgard and beyond: Set within the untamed forests, mountains, and realms of Norse lore, God of war features a distinctly new setting with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters, and gods
- Vicious, physical combat with an over the shoulder free camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before
That distinction matters when interpreting other Greek imagery in Valhalla, too. A character’s appearance can be a memory, thought, or symbolic element without changing the character’s established fate.
What does the new afterlife setting confirm?
The announced God of War: Laufey has an afterlife premise, but that alone does not establish that a slain Olympian has returned. In a June 16, 2026 preview, game director Ariel Lawrence said: “Faye is dead and she finds herself in the afterlife of the gods.” The statement concerns Faye and the game’s setting; it does not identify a Greek god who is alive, resurrected, or scheduled to appear.

- Take advantage of multidirectional 3D Audio; hear enemies approaching from any direction. (3D audio with stereo headphones (analog or USB))
- Bask in the beautiful worlds you travel through, brought to life by precise art direction and arresting attention to detail.
- Switch between full 4K resolution at a targeted 30 frames per second, or dynamic resolution upscaled to 4K at a targeted 60fps. (4K resolution requires a compatible 4K TV or display)
Lawrence has also described encounters with gods Kratos killed as a possible long-term direction for the franchise. In a June 9, 2026 report, GamesRadar+ quoted him saying it was “definitely the kind of long-term potential” for a franchise that has killed many gods. That is a broad possibility, not an announcement about a particular character or a change to current canon.
How to read an apparent return
God of War can revisit a dead character without undoing the death. The important question is what kind of appearance the story establishes:
Rank #3
- Living as a man outside the shadow of the gods - Kratos, together with his son Atreus, must venture into the brutal Norse wilds and fight to fulfil a deeply personal quest.
- Discover an emotionally gripping tale of father and son.
- Journey to a dark, elemental world of fearsome creatures.
- Conquer your foes in vicious close-quarters combat.
- Living character: The story establishes that the person is alive in the present.
- Memory or mental representation: The appearance takes place in someone’s mind or recollection. The studio’s explanation places Valhalla’s Helios here.
- Afterlife appearance: A dead character appears in an afterlife setting. That does not, by itself, mean the character has been resurrected.
- Explicit resurrection: The story directly establishes that the character returned to life. No cited announcement or studio explanation confirms this for a named Greek god.
Santa Monica’s discussion of Hope adds context to Valhalla’s return to Kratos’s Greek past: Gaubert explained that Hope is both symbolic and literal in the Greek saga, since Kratos absorbs it when he opens Pandora’s Box and Athena wants to take it from him. That is a reason the past remains meaningful to the story, not evidence that the dead Olympians have returned.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is established—and what remains open
- Kratos killed many Greek gods, according to PlayStation’s official recap, but the source does not claim he killed every Greek deity.
- The major Greek gods he killed remain treated as dead in the established story.
- Helios’s Valhalla appearance is explained by Santa Monica Studio as Kratos’s mind representing him.
- The announced afterlife setting for Faye and comments about possible future encounters do not confirm the return of a named Greek god.
As of October 7, 2026, the most accurate reading is that the Greek gods Kratos killed remain dead unless a future story explicitly establishes otherwise. The games and cited official material do not settle every question about what happens to every god after death.
