There is no single best iPad game for every player. This shortlist groups current App Store examples by what you want to play—story-driven RPGs, action, puzzles, offline sessions, paid games, or controller play—rather than pretending Apple’s featured shelves are a comparative ranking. The titles are starting points, not tested winners; check each game’s listing in your region for price, purchase model, compatibility, and current availability.
How to choose an iPad game
Start with the experience you want: a long-form story, repeatable short sessions, a puzzle to work through, or action that suits a controller. Then check whether the game is free-to-start or paid, whether it works offline, and whether it supports your iPad and preferred controls. Those details vary by game and can change.
Apple’s US iPad Games catalog organizes games into categories such as Action, Racing, Strategy, Puzzle, Roleplaying, Adventure, Simulation, Board, Sports, Card, Indie, Word, Family, and Music. It also features shelves for offline games, paid games, controller play, editor selections, and Apple Arcade. These are useful discovery filters, not independent reviews or proof that one title is better than another. Explore Apple’s App Store and open each game’s individual listing before deciding.
RPGs and story-led games
Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail
Both appear in the App Store’s updated-games section, making them candidates to investigate if you want a prominent RPG. Their appearance there does not establish which is a better fit, nor does it confirm current device requirements or purchase details. Check the listing for your region.

Stardew Valley and Bastion
Stardew Valley is featured among top paid games, while Bastion appears in the offline-games grouping. They offer different discovery routes for players looking for a paid game or an offline candidate; verify the current listing for the details that matter to you.
Shooters and action games
Apple’s controller-play collection includes Call of Duty: Mobile, Warframe, Resident Evil 4, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, and Diablo Immortal. If you prefer physical controls, use that shelf as a starting point, then confirm controller support and compatibility for the specific game and iPad. Controller support is not a guarantee that every model or setup will work.

These titles provide several directions to explore if you want puzzle-led or distinctive indie experiences. The catalog does not compare their difficulty, length, accessibility, or suitability for a particular player, so check individual listings and game descriptions.

Games to consider for offline play
Apple’s offline grouping features FTL: Faster Than Light, INSIDE, Pocket City 2, Bastion, and Vampire Survivors. A place on that shelf is a useful lead, but offline behavior can depend on the game and circumstances such as initial setup or updates. Confirm the current listing and any relevant in-game requirements before relying on a title without a connection.
Paid games and free-to-start options
The App Store’s top-paid grouping includes Stardew Valley, Minecraft, Geometry Dash, and Bloons TD 6. The shelf helps identify games presented as paid, but it is not a complete price comparison. Prices and purchase terms can vary by region and change over time; check the live listing for the current amount and any in-app purchases before buying.

For games not shown in that paid grouping, do not assume the purchase model from the title or its genre. Review the listing to see whether a game is free to download, includes in-app purchases, or requires another form of payment.

Check compatibility and availability before installing
Apple Support describes finding iPad games across categories including action, adventure, racing, and puzzles. Apple’s Games overview states: “On iPhone and iPad, every game that is available in the App Store is available in the Games app.” That refers to discovery through the Games app; it does not mean every game runs on every iPad model.
