Asphalt 9: Legends earned a 74/100 Metascore on iOS and 61/100 on Nintendo Switch, but those scores represent different critic samples—not one verdict for every version. Reviewers praised its fast, accessible arcade racing and presentation while criticizing free-to-play progression; Switch reviews also raised online and performance concerns.
What are the Metacritic scores for Asphalt 9?

What did critics like about Asphalt 9?
Positive reviews emphasize how readily the game delivers arcade-racing thrills: accessible controls, speed, dramatic crashes and polished visuals. Reviewers also praised the breadth of cars, tracks and career content.
Pocket Gamer UK gave the iOS version 90/100. Its Metacritic summary describes the appeal this way: “Asphalt 9 offers controls for everyone, fun for everyone, and white-knuckle, cackling-with-laughter crashes for everyone.” Multiplayer.it also scored it 90/100, calling it “the best arcade racer on mobile” and pointing to its graphics, cars, tracks and substantial career.

What were the main criticisms?
The recurring concern is the free-to-play progression and monetization structure. Some critics felt car upgrades, grinding or purchases could matter too much, distracting from racing skill and fun.
Metro GameCentral’s iOS review gave the game 40/100 and objected that “skill is a distant second to car upgrades.” The criticism is significant alongside the praise: the game’s accessible racing may be enjoyable, but reviewers did not agree that progression always lets driving ability take center stage.

On Switch, monetization and progression friction were also prominent. Nintendo Life’s 70/100 summary called it a “free and surprisingly fun arcade racing game,” while warning that its mobile microtransaction structure could spoil the experience. Cubed3, also at 70/100, highlighted the always-online requirement and similarly questioned the role of skill.
How do the iOS and Switch reviews compare?
| Platform | Metacritic score and sample | Sentiment breakdown | Review themes |
|---|---|---|---|
| iOS | 74/100 from 9 critic reviews (Metacritic listing, current in 2026) | 7 positive, 1 mixed, 1 negative | Strong praise for accessibility, arcade thrills, visuals and content; criticism of upgrade-driven progression. |
| Nintendo Switch | 61/100 from 8 critic reviews (Metacritic listing, current in 2026) | 1 positive, 6 mixed, 1 negative | Reviews praise racing and presentation but more often flag monetization and progression; summaries also mention always-online play and frame-rate issues. |
Pure Nintendo’s Switch review, scored 70/100, praised the driving, tracks and vehicles while mentioning frame-rate issues. These are concerns raised in the cited Switch reviews, not a claim that every player or session experiences the same performance.
