Assassin’s Creed Shadows Review: A Lavish World, Familiar RPG Rhythms

A detailed Japan setting and two distinct protagonists make Assassin’s Creed Shadows inviting, while familiar RPG progression and repetitive missions temper the adventure. The 2026 final update adds a short story conclusion and repeatable build challenges.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is worth playing if its late-Sengoku Japan setting, stealth-action, and long-form RPG progression are what you want. Its detailed world and contrasting protagonists give the familiar formula real appeal, but refinements to stealth, traversal, and combat do not make every mission or progression loop feel new. The June 16, 2026 update adds a short story capper and repeatable gear challenges; it does not change the game’s basic shape.

What kind of Assassin’s Creed game is Shadows?

Released on March 20, 2025, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is an open-world action RPG set in late Sengoku Japan. Its central contrast is between Naoe, a shinobi built around stealth, and Yasuke, a samurai suited to direct combat. Players can approach the world through both, though the shift between them is more meaningful as a change in tactics than as a departure from the series’ established RPG framework.

That framework still revolves around abilities, gear, builds, and challenges that grow in difficulty. For someone arriving from Origins, Odyssey, or Valhalla, the broad rhythm will be familiar: explore, pursue objectives, improve a character, and take on tougher opposition. Shadows feels like a refinement of that model rather than a reinvention.

Is Assassin’s Creed Shadows worth playing?

Its strongest case is the setting. Windows Central praised the worldbuilding, polish, and traversal, while critic excerpts gathered by Metacritic include praise for the beauty and detail of Japanese cities and countryside. The setting gives exploration an immediate sense of place, and the two protagonists support different ways of moving through its conflicts.

Naoe’s stealth-oriented approach rewards patience and positioning; Yasuke’s heavier combat makes direct confrontation the more natural option. Windows Central found that contrast meaningful and described Shadows as trimming some excess from recent RPG entries. That is a real improvement in focus, but it does not erase the underlying familiarity of the progression and mission structure.

The critical response reflects that split rather than a single consensus. GameSpot lists an 8/10 review score and displays a Metacritic score of 81 on its game page. Those are release-era snapshots, not objective measurements of quality or a substitute for individual reviews. Metacritic’s collected excerpts include both praise for the setting and protagonists and complaints about repetitive missions, drawn-out dialogue or cutscenes, tedious battles, and stealth, action, or platforming that some critics found insufficiently advanced.

Where do the RPG mechanics feel familiar?

Progression and gear

Gear, abilities, and builds give players reasons to keep exploring and refining their approach. That loop is also one of the game’s clearest links to the recent RPG trilogy: stronger equipment and character options feed into challenges that ask for more of the same. Players who enjoy tuning a build may find satisfying goals here; those who want each new objective to transform the play experience may find the upgrades more incremental.

Mission rhythm and repetition

The most persistent criticism in the review excerpts is not that Shadows lacks content, but that some of its objectives can feel repetitive or unimaginative. The variety between Naoe’s stealth and Yasuke’s combat helps vary the means of tackling an encounter; it cannot automatically make the reason for going there feel fresh. Long dialogue and cutscenes can also slow the pace for players eager to get back to exploration or action.

Stealth, traversal, and combat

Traversal feels improved to Windows Central, and Naoe gives stealth a distinct place beside Yasuke’s direct approach. Yet critics cited by Metacritic disagreed about whether the action, platforming, and stealth meaningfully move the series forward. The fairest way to frame the result is as polish and refinement within a recognizable formula—not a universally accepted leap for the genre or franchise.

How do Naoe and Yasuke change the experience?

The character split is a practical strength: Naoe’s shinobi playstyle favors stealth, while Yasuke’s samurai approach favors heavier combat. Switching between them lets the player respond to a challenge with different tools rather than forcing every situation into one style. The contrast also gives the RPG systems a clearer purpose, since gear and abilities can be considered in relation to how each character handles difficulty.

  • Create a fully customizable hideaway for your growing Shinobi league, where you train recruits, craft new equipment and interact with important characters; set the room layout, decoration and accessories yourself

The protagonists’ differing approaches do not settle every question about narrative balance. The available reviews point to the appeal of the pair, but do not establish a unanimous view of how evenly the story serves them. Players should expect two distinct combat identities within one shared adventure, not assume that the story gives both precisely equal weight.

What did the final major update add?

Ubisoft released the final major update on June 16, 2026. It adds two free features: Black Tides, a story arc that concludes Naoe and Yasuke’s story with about two hours of content, and Domains, a repeatable challenge mode built around gear and character builds. Ubisoft’s announcement describes the update; an Xbox Wire interview with Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois explains the thinking behind it.

Black Tides

Black Tides is the story-focused addition. Ubisoft describes it as about two hours long and says it brings Naoe and Yasuke’s story to a conclusion. The studio has also said that requests for more Templars and connections to wider series lore helped shape the content. It is a concise epilogue rather than a new full-length campaign.

Domains

Domains is for players who want to test and adjust their builds through increasingly difficult challenges. Lemay-Comtois described it as a way to try accumulated gear, change perks and abilities, and switch between Yasuke and Naoe for greater challenges and rewards. In other words, it extends the RPG loop for players who enjoy optimizing it; it is not a replacement for the campaign’s mission structure.

Ubisoft says post-launch content, including these additions, was shaped to some degree by community response. The update is free, but it should not be confused with the separate Claws of Awaji expansion, which Ubisoft lists as available on the official game page.

How long is Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

There is no completion-time estimate established here that can be treated as typical for all players. Windows Central’s reviewer reported spending 112 hours on their playthrough in 2025 and advised against the game for people who dislike modern Assassin’s Creed RPGs or prefer games lasting 10–30 hours. That 112-hour figure is one reviewer’s experience, not a promise or average. The later Black Tides arc adds about two hours according to Ubisoft; Domains is repeatable, so its time commitment depends on how much challenge content a player chooses to pursue.
