Assassin’s Creed Shadows follows Naoe, an Iga shinobi, and Yasuke, a samurai, through late Sengoku Japan. Their distinct playstyles and separate progression, stats, skills, and gear make the first useful choice a simple one: match the character to the task. This guide hub explains how to think about that choice, untangle progression, use scouts and hideout upgrades, and reach the game’s post-launch story and challenge content.
Which character should you use?
Naoe and Yasuke are not interchangeable versions of the same build. Ubisoft describes them as characters with different playstyles and separate progression, stats, skills, and gear. Choose based on the kind of encounter or activity you want to approach; investment in one character does not mean the other shares the same progression or equipment.

How do level, Knowledge rank, and Mastery points differ?
These progression systems address different needs. Raising character level does not by itself unlock every ability tier: Knowledge rank controls access to those tiers, while Mastery points are spent to unlock abilities.

For Knowledge, look for map activities marked with orange hexagons: completing these activities increases Knowledge. This makes them a useful target when your immediate goal is access to higher ability tiers, rather than simply raising a character’s level.
How do scouts and hideout upgrades help?
Hideout development has practical effects on exploration and resource gathering. A Study adds scouts, and scouts help locate objectives and resources. Upgraded Stables add a resource-gathering benefit: scouts can tag resource stockpiles for collection at the end of a season.

- Want scouts to gather resources? Upgrade the Stables so scouts can tag stockpiles for end-of-season collection.
- Need more scouts? Develop the Study, which adds scouts.
The scout resource collection described here happens at the end of a season, so it is not an immediate pickup. These hideout features support exploration and resource gathering; they do not replace completing activities yourself.
What do the final story update and Domains add?
Ubisoft describes Black Tides as the final free content drop and an approximately two-hour story capper. That is Ubisoft’s estimate, not a guaranteed playtime for every player. The final mission has explicit prerequisites: complete the main story and the two earlier post-launch quests, A Critical Encounter and A Puzzlement.

Domains: a separate replay challenge
Domains is an endgame challenge mode, separate from the story route. Ubisoft describes five maps with objectives and gameplay modifiers. The modifiers can change between plays, and Ubisoft says players may need to adjust their builds to match the challenge parameters. Maps also differ in layout, sightlines, lighting, and enemy archetypes, so a build suited to one run may not suit the next.
Associate Game Director Simon summarized the mode in Ubisoft’s final-update interview: “The basics are that there are five challenging maps which will require you to complete objectives, but there are some curve balls thrown at you with gameplay modifiers each time you play.” Treat Domains as a mode to adapt to, not as a fixed walkthrough with one build that works for every run.
