No: PS5 does not natively play original PS3, PS2, or PlayStation discs or downloads. Sony’s FAQ answers “No” to whether original PlayStation, PS2, or PS3 games work on PS5. There are two separate exceptions to keep in mind: selected PS3 games can be streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium in supported markets, and some older games have separately released PS4 or PS5 remakes, remasters, or re-releases.
Can PS5 play original PS3, PS2, or PS1 games?
No. Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility FAQ says the console plays PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, “only.” That answer covers original PlayStation, PS2, and PS3 software: the PS5 does not run those generations’ original discs or digital purchases as native games.
The distinction matters because a game’s name appearing on PS5 does not mean your old disc or license is supported. A remake, remaster, or re-release is a separate product for PS4 or PS5, while a PS Plus catalog listing may provide streaming access to a selected PS3 game rather than compatibility with the original copy.
Can PS5 play PS3 discs?
No. Inserting an original PS3 disc into a PS5 does not let you play it. The PS5’s native backward compatibility does not extend to PS3 discs, and Sony’s separate PS3 streaming option is not disc playback.

Can you play PS3 games on PS5 through PlayStation Plus?
Some PS3 games are available to stream on PS5 through PlayStation Plus Premium, but this is conditional access to selected catalog titles, not general PS3 compatibility. Sony’s US PlayStation Plus page describes classic PS3 games in the Classics Catalog as streaming-only.
- Check the specific game: Only eligible titles in the current catalog can be streamed. Sony says catalog availability can change over time and vary by plan.
- Check your region and tier: Premium and cloud streaming are not available everywhere. Confirm that the service and the game are offered in your territory.
- Have a suitable connection: Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed for cloud streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p. Those are service requirements, not a promise of smooth play on every network.
For a title you have on disc or bought digitally for PS3, a catalog stream does not convert that copy into a PS5-compatible version. Streaming availability and ownership of an original PS3 purchase are separate questions.

Why PS4 compatibility doesn’t mean PS3 compatibility
PS5 backward compatibility is broad for PS4, not for every PlayStation generation. Sony said in its November 2020 launch-era FAQ that more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 games would be playable on PS5. That figure describes PS4 games at launch; it is not a current audited measurement and says nothing about PS1, PS2, or PS3 support.

Ways to play older PlayStation games
| Option | What it can do | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus Premium streaming | Stream selected PS3 classics on PS5 where cloud streaming is supported. | Game listing, region, subscription tier, connection, and changing catalog availability. |
| A PS3 console | Play original PS3-format games directly, subject to the condition and functionality of the console and disc drive. | For PS1 or PS2 discs, confirm the exact PS3 model and title. Sony’s PS3 manuals describe PS1 and PS2 format compatibility as limited; support is not universal across models and games. |
| A separately released PS4 or PS5 version | Play a specific classic if a publisher has released a remake, remaster, or re-release for a supported console. | Confirm that the version is available for your console and whether it is a separate purchase or entitlement. It does not make the original disc compatible. |
What to check before choosing an option
- If you own a disc, identify its original platform. A PS3 disc is not usable in a PS5 just because a related game appears in a streaming catalog.
- If you want a digital copy, check whether the exact title has a PS4 or PS5 release, or is currently included in the Premium streaming catalog.
- If considering a PS3 for PS1 or PS2 games, verify compatibility for that particular console model and game rather than assuming every PS3 supports them.
