Bid for Power Was Released in 2004: What to Know Before You Play

Bid for Power is a Quake III Arena mod released in 2004, not a new 2026 game. Its v1.2 download appeared on ModDB in 2008 and requires the full retail game.

Yes—Bid for Power was released years ago. ModDB lists the Quake III Arena total-conversion mod as released in 2004 and says the original project is no longer in development. Its separately listed v1.2 full download was added to ModDB on April 14, 2008. Neither date points to a new 2026 release.

Which release are people referring to?

Bid for Power began as a Dragon Ball Z-inspired Quake III Arena mod. ModDB says legal problems led the team to replace that universe with original content; it does not identify a specific claimant or legal outcome. The listing dates the mod to 2004 and marks the original project as no longer under development. ModDB’s Bid for Power listing

The familiar v1.2 full ZIP is a later file listing, not a new release of the original project: ModDB dates its addition to April 14, 2008. The file description presents it as a fast-paced multiplayer deathmatch with modes including Free For All, Last Man Standing, Team Play, The Battle for the Planet, Survivor, and Tournament. Is the recreation project a new official release?

No such status is established by the available project information. The Bid For Power Recreation Project repository describes itself as a Quake III total-conversion recreation, records the original project history as starting in 1998 and ending in 2002, and offers source code and build instructions. Its existence does not establish a new official release of the original mod. The repository labels its mod source code GPLv2 and says the material is based on Quake III Arena. What kind of game is it?

The project is described as fast, Ki-powered combat played mostly in the air. It is focused on multiplayer rather than a story campaign: the v1.2 guide says there is no single-player campaign, though bots can provide opponents if you cannot play with friends over LAN or the Internet. These are descriptions from the project materials, not current hands-on testing. The v1.2 guide and download page

What do you need to install v1.2?

The legacy installation guide specifies the full retail version of Quake III Arena. It explicitly says the demo version will not work. Its Windows instructions call for installing the full game before running the v1.2 installer; its Linux and Mac directions also require the full retail game and describe applying a point release before extracting the mod into the Quake III directory. Because these are old instructions, they do not confirm compatibility with current operating systems or establish that the files are safe to install.

Can you still play it online?

ModDB warns that finding a server may be difficult and that modified variants can have compatibility issues. The available information does not verify current server counts or promise an active online community. Bots are the documented fallback when multiplayer with friends is not available.
