What Patch 4 did—and did not—say about beards
Larian’s November 2, 2023 Patch 4 notes include character-creation and controller-interface changes, but do not specifically list a facial-hair texture or appearance-slider fix. That means the notes do not establish that Patch 4 caused the reported beard symptoms, or that it fixed them.

Players have described facial hair as blurry, blocky, or patchy, sometimes using phrases such as “Strange Facial Hair Texturing” or “Beard bug after Patch 4?” These are anecdotal reports, not an official diagnosis, and they do not show how widespread the issue is. The available reports also do not establish whether a particular case is a rendering problem, a slider-input problem, or both.
What later updates document
Patch 8: a specific clipping fix
Larian’s Patch 8 notes, published in April 2025, document a fix for Fireforge Tassels beard clipping and stretching in some cinematics. This is a specific style-and-situation fix, not a blanket facial-hair texture or slider fix.

Hotfix 36: no general beard fix listed
Hotfix 36, version 4.1.1.7209685, was published on March 26, 2026. Its listed fixes address a save-loading crash and other crashes, Xbox inventory and trade tooltips, and a Mac character-creation blocker; it does not list a general beard-texture or slider fix. Larian’s patches and hotfixes support listing identifies Hotfix 36 as its latest listed hotfix.
October 2026: a brief note about patchiness
In an October 2026 announcement for game version 4.1.1.7631656, a Larian community representative said the update would let characters “grow slightly less patchy beards” (announcement on r/BaldursGate3). The post gives no technical explanation or platform scope, and does not confirm that every beard-texture or slider symptom is resolved.
How to narrow down the cause
Change one condition at a time and note whether the same character, facial-hair style, and lighting produce a different result. The checks below are diagnostic experiments; Larian’s guidance does not promise that any one will fix this specific beard issue.
- Record the starting conditions. Note your platform, game version, graphics API if you are on PC, relevant graphics settings, whether mods are active, and which facial-hair styles show the defect. Separately record whether a slider fails to respond or responds but produces an unexpected appearance.
- Test without mods. If you use mods, update or disable them, then check whether the issue remains. Larian warns that mods can cause UI and face-texture problems and recommends isolating mod-related issues before reporting a base-game defect (Mod Issues).
- On PC, verify the game files. Use the verification or repair option in your game client. For GOG Galaxy, Larian’s bug-report guidance gives this path: select the game, open the settings icon beside Play, then under Manage Installation choose “Verify / Repair.”
- Compare graphics settings on PC. Try DirectX 11 instead of Vulkan, or Vulkan instead of DirectX 11, and test lower graphics settings. Larian suggests these checks for relevant issues; they are not confirmed beard-specific fixes.
- Retest the slider separately. Check whether its input changes when you move it, and whether the resulting appearance differs from what you expect. No cited official guidance resolves the exact slider symptom, so describing the observed behavior is more useful than assuming it is the same as a texture defect.
When and how to report it to Larian
If the problem persists in an unmodded game and you can reproduce it, submit a bug report through Larian’s How to submit a Bug Report page. Include the details that distinguish a texture symptom from a slider symptom:

- The expected appearance and what actually happens, with steps to reproduce it.
- A screenshot, and a save file if it reproduces the issue and is appropriate to attach.
These details help Larian assess the specific case; the available reports and patch notes do not identify a universal root cause. They also provide no evidence that buying a GPU, PC, or peripheral will solve it.
