Connections #947 answers

The 16 tiles divide into four groups of four:

Color Category Tiles
Yellow Present go-withs BOW, CARD, GIFT WRAP, RIBBON
Green Jostle ELBOW, PRESS, SHOULDER, SHOVE
Blue Accessories for Mr. Monopoly BOWTIE, CANE, MONEYBAG, TOP HAT
Purple Parts of the foot plus starting letter OTOE, PARCH, RANKLE, WHEEL

Why the purple group is the trickiest

The purple tiles each contain a foot part after an extra starting letter: OTOE contains TOE after O, PARCH contains ARCH after P, RANKLE contains ANKLE after R, and WHEEL contains HEEL after W. The foot words are embedded in longer words rather than shown as standalone tiles.

How Connections works

Connections asks players to sort 16 items into four groups of four that share a common link. The colors indicate rising difficulty: yellow, green, blue, then purple. Players can make up to four mistakes. The game is available through NYT Games on desktop and mobile; the New York Times Help Center also lists NYT.com/games, The Athletic app, and the NYT News app as access points. Progress and statistics are linked to a user’s NYT account.
