The 2024 Player’s Handbook strengthens several healing spells, changes how some familiar spells work, redesigns the Conjure spell family, and adds new spells while bringing popular spells from earlier supplements into the core list. These are notable examples, not a complete change log: D&D Beyond describes nearly 400 spells in the book but does not give an audited count of how many differ from the 2014 rules.
Healing spells restore more Hit Points
D&D Beyond’s official overview says healing spells were increased to better reflect the action or Bonus Action and spell slot spent to cast them. It gives these level-1 examples:
- Cure Wounds: 2d8 plus the caster’s spellcasting modifier.
- Healing Word: 2d4 plus the caster’s spellcasting modifier.
Those are the base amounts reported in the overview, not a complete account of each spell’s scaling or current corrected rules text. For exact mechanics, use the current spell entry and applicable errata.
Some familiar spells have a different tactical role
The revision is not simply a collection of damage increases. Some spells gain or change utility. Prayer of Healing, for example, restores Hit Points and also gives up to five creatures the benefits of a Short Rest. D&D Beyond also highlights Cloud of Daggers: its damage was adjusted to remain consequential in later rounds, even when enemies try to avoid its area.

These examples illustrate changes to what a spell can do or how it affects a fight; they should not be read as a claim that every familiar spell received a damage buff.
The Conjure spell family was redesigned
Conjure Animals, Conjure Celestial, and Conjure Elemental are among the spells whose design changed. In a 2023 playtest summary, D&D Beyond described the goal as distinguishing Conjure spells from the Summon spells introduced in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. That summary is historical context, not the final rules: consult the 2024 spell entries and later corrections for current mechanics.

New spells and more spells in the core list
D&D Beyond identifies Starry Wisp, Tasha’s Bubbling Cauldron, and Jallarzi’s Storm of Radiance as new spells in the 2024 handbook. Its overview describes Tasha’s Bubbling Cauldron as creating a magical cauldron that allies can use to obtain Common or Uncommon potions. Jallarzi’s Storm of Radiance deals Radiant and Thunder damage and imposes conditions.
The core list also includes popular spells first published in supplements. Toll the Dead, originally introduced in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, is one example. These additions expand the book’s selection; they do not mean every spell from earlier supplements was moved into it.

Errata can change the current spell text
D&D Beyond’s Player’s Handbook errata says corrections appear in recent printings and have been applied to D&D Beyond. The listed spell corrections include replacement text for Animal Shapes; revised upcast scaling for Conjure Elemental, Conjure Fey, and Conjure Minor Elementals; an adjusted upcast threshold for Conjure Woodland Beings; a school correction for Flaming Sphere; an HP adjustment for Giant Insect; and an added Temporary Hit Points sentence for Polymorph.
That makes the version of the text important when comparing spells. A first printing may not match a recent printing or the current D&D Beyond entry; check the errata for the corrected wording rather than treating an older copy as the final reference.

How to compare 2014 and 2024 spells
Be explicit about which rules you mean. D&D Beyond distinguishes the 2014 spell list as Legacy from the 2024 list. Players using Legacy content with a 2014 class can see both lists, with 2014 spells marked Legacy; players using 2024 content see the 2024 list. Existing 2014 content remains accessible.
The book contains nearly 400 spells, according to D&D Beyond, and more than a hundred pages of spell material. Those figures describe the book’s scale, not the number of changed spells. The official overviews cited here do not provide a complete count of revisions, so spell-by-spell examples are more useful than a claimed total.
