Elden Ring Nightreign is worth considering if you want repeatable, high-pressure co-op sessions and enjoy learning bosses through multiple attempts. It is less suited to players looking for another sprawling, bespoke solo campaign like Elden Ring. Solo and offline play are available, but three-player cooperation is the format the game is built around.
What is Elden Ring Nightreign?
Elden Ring Nightreign is a standalone action spinoff set in the Elden Ring universe, released worldwide on May 30, 2025. It is a separate game, not an expansion that requires the original Elden Ring. Bandai Namco describes it as a standalone adventure that reimagines the series’ core design in a new gaming experience.

Instead of a long open-world campaign, the game sends players into Limveld on repeatable expeditions. You select a Nightfarer, explore and fight under a shrinking time limit, collect gear, and prepare for a major boss encounter. The format preserves familiar weapons, enemies, and combat ideas while making each run more structured and urgent.
How does an expedition work?
An expedition covers three in-game days. During each day, players make quick decisions about routes, lesser enemies, map events, weapons, and loot. Runes gathered during a run can be spent to level up at Sites of Grace. As night closes in, the playable area contracts and pushes the group toward its next major fight; the third day culminates in a Nightlord battle.

PlayStation’s hands-on report estimates a three-day-and-night run at about 35–40 minutes. Treat that as a useful session-length guide, not a guaranteed duration for every party or run. The time pressure gives expeditions a clear pace, but leaves less room for aimless exploration than the main game.
What makes it different from Elden Ring?
The core change is the run-based structure. Elden Ring gives players broad freedom to explore its world and develop a character over a long campaign. Nightreign asks players to make rapid choices within a limited expedition, with routes and loot that vary between attempts. Success depends not just on combat skill, but on adapting to what a run offers and coordinating around the shrinking map.
Nightfarers are distinct playable characters with their own abilities and roles, rather than blank slates for free-form character creation. Relics add a persistent build-experimentation layer across expeditions: the official guide says each relic can have up to three random effects, and each character can equip up to three relics on designated vessels. This gives players ways to shape a character between runs without replacing the game’s defined character identities.

Can you play Nightreign solo or offline?
Yes. The official starter guide lists solo play both online and offline. Cooperative multiplayer requires an internet connection. The game’s promotional framing and systems put three-player squads at the center, though, so solo availability should not be mistaken for a separate solo campaign designed around a different pace.

TechRadar’s review praises the flexibility created by Nightfarer abilities, weapons, elemental damage, and leveling, while reporting no difficulty settings, subtitle customization, or HUD alteration options. It also found only basic camera and ranged-aim adjustments, and noted that not every console button can be rebound. These are that review’s observations, not a promise that every setup will feel the same.
Critical reception has been generally positive, though less unanimous than the reputation of the mainline game. Windows Central recorded a May 28, 2025 snapshot of 78 on Metacritic from 64 reviews and 79 on OpenCritic from 81 reviews; aggregator scores can change over time. FromSoftware reported more than two million units shipped worldwide on launch day, a sales figure that does not establish current player population or long-term retention.
