Start with updates and a restart, then use the crash pattern to decide whether to troubleshoot one game or the whole console. Save a factory reset or system-software reinstall for last, because reinstalling system software erases console data.
What CE-108255-1 means—and what the crash pattern tells you
Sony describes CE-108255-1 as an error with a game or application. It is a broad crash code, not proof that the PS5 is defective or that its SSD, GPU, or power supply has failed. Sony’s error-code guidance recommends updating the game and directs unresolved cases to PlayStation Repairs.
| What you observe | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| One game crashes | That game’s update, installation, save, mode, or a title-specific bug. |
| Several unrelated games crash | System software, storage, ventilation, accessories, or possible console hardware trouble. |
| One save or location triggers the crash | A save-specific problem or a reproducible game bug. |
| Only an online mode crashes | The game, mode, account, or online service; this pattern alone does not establish a console fault. |
| The console shuts down, shows artifacts, or warns that it is overheating | Stop treating it as an ordinary app crash; check ventilation and seek support if it persists. |
Before changing anything, note the game, its version if shown, what you were doing, and whether the crash happens at launch, loading, or a repeatable point. That record helps distinguish a title-specific issue from a console-wide one.
1. Update the game and PS5 system software
Check for a game update
- Highlight the game on the PS5 home screen.
- Press the Options button and select Check for Update.
- Install any available update, then restart the game and test the same activity.
This is Sony’s first recommendation for CE-108255-1. Insomniac’s crash guidance also recommends updating both the game and PS5 system software. A patch can sometimes introduce a new issue, however: if the crashes began immediately after a game update and affect only that title or mode, check the publisher’s known issues rather than repeatedly resetting the console.

Check for a PS5 system update
- Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software and follow the prompts.
- After the update and restart, try the game again.
If the normal update fails, Sony’s system-software instructions explain how to update from USB in Safe Mode. The drive must be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, with folders named PS5 and UPDATE and the update file saved as PS5UPDATE.PUP in PS5/UPDATE. Sony specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file. The Safe Mode route is Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device; follow Sony’s current instructions to download the official file.
2. Close the game, restart, and power-cycle if needed
- Press the PS button, highlight the affected game, press Options, and choose Close Game.
- Restart the PS5 from its power menu, then launch the game and repeat the activity that caused the crash.
- If the console is behaving abnormally, turn it off completely. Wait until its power indicator is fully off, unplug the power cable for several minutes, reconnect it, and start the console.
Do not unplug the console while its power indicator is illuminated or blinking. A restart is a low-risk recovery step, not evidence that corrupted data has been repaired.
3. Test another game, save, or mode to isolate the trigger
Before deleting or resetting anything, compare what fails. After the restart, try another game or application. If the problem is confined to one title, and the game allows it, test a different save, an earlier save, another mode, or offline play. Do not delete a save to perform this test.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
- If other games work, focus next on the affected title’s installation, save, mode, or publisher-reported issues.
- If several unrelated games fail, investigate system software, storage, ventilation, and possible hardware trouble.
- If the crash repeats at the same location or loading point, a game bug or save-specific problem is plausible; the code alone cannot distinguish them.
- If only online play fails, look for a mode-, account-, or service-specific issue before treating the console as defective.
Keep the record of the exact point of failure; it is useful if you contact the publisher or PlayStation Support.

4. Temporarily test VRR, HDR, and graphics mode
This is a controlled test for crashes that seem tied to a display setup, demanding scene, or particular graphics mode—not a universal fix. Insomniac recommends testing Performance and Fidelity/Resolution modes and temporarily disabling VRR and HDR.
- Open Settings > Screen and Video and temporarily disable VRR and HDR.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets and select the graphics preset opposite to the one you were using: Performance Mode or Resolution Mode.
- Restart the game and test the same scene or activity.
- If the crash stops, turn VRR, HDR, and the original preset back on one at a time to identify whether one setting is associated with the problem.
Menu wording can vary slightly with system software. A setting that appears associated with the crash is a diagnostic clue, not proof that it is the root cause; check for game, PS5, and display updates before accepting a permanent reduction in picture quality.

5. Back up saves, then reinstall the affected game
Reinstalling is a reasonable next step when one game crashes repeatedly, especially after an interrupted update, at launch, or while installed on external storage. Back up or synchronize important saves first. Deleting a game targets its application, but do not assume that a save is backed up or delete saved data as a routine troubleshooting step. If you use PlayStation Plus cloud saves, check that the save has synchronized; otherwise use the PS5 backup options available to you.
- Open Settings > Storage, choose the relevant storage location, then select Games and Apps.
- Select the affected game and delete the application.
- Reinstall it from your Game Library, PlayStation Store, or game disc, then install its available update.
- If it was installed on a USB drive or added M.2 SSD, install or move it to the PS5’s internal console storage for the test.
- Launch the game and retry the activity that caused the crash.
Sony’s CE-108255-1 guidance and Insomniac’s support article both include deleting and reinstalling the application among the steps to try. A successful test on internal storage may help isolate a storage-path problem; it does not prove that the other drive is defective.

Rebuilding the database is not the same operation as resetting the PS5, and it is not a guaranteed fix. Insomniac advises caution because local data may be lost; back up important saves before using Safe Mode, and read each menu choice before confirming it. Sony’s Safe Mode instructions describe how to enter the menu.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Check storage, discs, ventilation, and connected devices
Compare storage locations
Make sure there is enough free console storage for the game and its updates, and test the affected game on internal storage if possible. Sony lists CE-100028-1 separately for insufficient SSD space, so low space is not the definition of CE-108255-1. It can still complicate installations and updates. A storage test is more useful than buying an SSD without evidence that storage is involved.
If you use a game disc
Inspect the disc for damage and clean it with a soft, lint-free cloth. If available, test another game disc. Sony’s disc troubleshooting guidance covers testing another disc and when to contact PlayStation Repairs. If only one disc-based game crashes, reinstalling that title and checking the disc are more relevant than replacing the console.

Check ventilation and peripherals when symptoms point there
Keep the PS5 in an open, ventilated location and clear visible dust from its external vents. Do not assume that every application crash is overheating. If the problem coincides with display or USB equipment, test with a known-good HDMI cable, another display, and no USB accessories other than the controller. Remove a capture card, hub, or unusual peripheral for the test; reconnect devices one at a time if the crash stops.
If the console shows an overheating warning, shuts down, or displays graphical corruption, stop stressing it and contact PlayStation Support if the problem persists. Those signs warrant more concern than an isolated game closure.
8. Reset or reinstall PS5 system software only as a last resort
A system-software reinstall is destructive. Sony distinguishes a normal reset from Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software); the latter deletes all data on the console. It may resolve some software or configuration problems, but cannot guarantee a fix for a game bug or hardware fault.
- Back up saved data and synchronize cloud saves if available.
- Make sure you know your account credentials and can redownload purchased games.
- Identify or disconnect external storage before starting.
- Read Sony’s current instructions for the exact operation; do not select a reset option casually.
For a USB reinstall, Sony specifies a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted drive, folders named PS5/UPDATE, and the official reinstallation file named PS5UPDATE.PUP in that folder. Start the console in Safe Mode and select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). Follow Sony’s system-software instructions for the current file and process. Afterward, test with a fresh game installation before restoring other variables.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact PlayStation
Contact PlayStation Repairs if unrelated games continue to crash after software troubleshooting, the error returns after a clean system-software reinstall and fresh game installation, or the console shuts down, overheats, shows artifacts, or fails to install or read games. Sony’s repair options, availability, and terms vary by country and device. If only one game or mode remains affected while other games work, contact that game’s publisher as well; a title-specific issue may not be a console repair problem.
CE-108255-1 does not by itself diagnose an SSD or other component. Avoid opening the console or buying replacement storage as a first response: the code and an isolated crash do not establish that either step is needed.
