In eligible in-experience chats, it can replace some profanity with civil wording before other players see the message—for example, Roblox says “Hurry TF up!” may appear as “Hurry up!” The launch is focused on profanity, not a replacement for Roblox’s broader filtering and enforcement systems.
What Roblox’s chat rephrasing changes
Previously, a message containing prohibited language could appear to other players as a string of hash marks, such as #####. With rephrasing, Roblox may instead display a moderated version that aims to keep the message’s meaning while removing profanity. The intervention happens before the message reaches other players, and Roblox says chat participants are notified when a message has been rephrased.
Roblox’s example is “Hurry TF up!” becoming “Hurry up!” That is the intended distinction: rather than suppressing the whole message, the system can let a cleaned-up version through so players can coordinate during a game. Preserving intent is Roblox’s goal, not a guarantee that every rewrite will retain the original tone or nuance. Roblox’s launch announcement describes the feature and example.
What it rewrites—and what it does not
At launch, Roblox says rephrasing is focused on profanity. It does not mean all messages that violate Roblox rules will be rewritten into polite alternatives. Messages involving harassment, discriminatory language, threats or violence, sexual content, personal information, or attempts to move conversations off-platform remain subject to the platform’s broader filtering and safety systems. Depending on the content and circumstances, a message may be blocked or hidden, and a user may face further action rather than see a rewrite.

Roblox’s chat, privacy and filtering guidance and Safety & Civility information describe protections and prohibited-content categories beyond profanity. A rephrased message should not be taken as evidence that the original was acceptable or that the sender cannot still face consequences.
Who can see rephrasing
Roblox describes the feature as applying to in-experience chat between users who have completed age checks and are in similar age groups, or between users recognized as Trusted Connections. The launch materials do not establish identical availability for every Roblox account, region, communication surface, or chat mode. It is not a blanket rewrite layer for all Roblox messaging.

Roblox says rephrasing supports languages covered by its automatic-translation tools. That is a defined, changing set—not necessarily every language—and Roblox’s launch materials do not provide a definitive language list. If a player sees different behavior from someone else, eligibility, chat context, language, or the kind of message may be relevant.
How it fits with age checks and moderation
The March announcement followed Roblox’s January 2026 expansion of age checks for chat. Roblox said age checks were being expanded globally wherever chat was available, with age-based communication intended to limit contact between adults and younger users. Rephrasing is an additional moderation layer, not a substitute for age controls or other safety measures. Roblox’s January age-check announcement provides that context.

Roblox also says it is upgrading its core text filter to detect more variations of prohibited language and more sophisticated attempts to bypass filtering, including leetspeak. That means the launch is not only a change in how some messages appear: stronger detection may also identify or block messages that previously evaded the filter. The company says serious and repeated Community Standards violations remain subject to layered safety systems, including nudges and other enforcement. A rewrite does not promise that a sender will avoid a warning, timeout, chat restriction, or more serious account action. Roblox’s developer announcement discusses the filter update and enforcement context.
What players and parents should watch for
Automated rephrasing may make a message easier to understand, but it can also change emphasis, urgency, sarcasm, or slang. A harmless name, abbreviation, foreign-language word, or game-specific term could also be mistaken for prohibited language. Roblox says it is testing cautiously to catch violations without increasing false positives, but has not published a public false-positive rate in the cited launch materials.

Roblox says all users see language allowed on the platform, while the sender sees what is not allowed, and that participants are notified when a message is rephrased. The launch materials do not fully specify how the notice appears on different devices or whether the sender can see the original wording. They also do not establish the system’s model architecture, external-provider use, message-retention practices, or whether individual decisions receive human review. Those details should not be inferred from the label “AI-powered.”
Rephrasing addresses wording, not the full meaning or safety of a conversation. Threats, coercion, grooming, scams, and manipulation can be expressed without profanity. Players and parents should use Roblox’s reporting tools for harassment or dangerous behavior rather than assuming that a cleaner-looking message means the platform has handled the underlying situation.

What creators need to know
For standard in-experience text-chat outputs, Roblox says it applies automatic filtering. Developers still have responsibility for text they control and display directly, so they should follow Roblox’s text-filtering requirements rather than assume the new rephrasing feature covers every user-generated string in their experience. See the Roblox Creator Hub text-filtering documentation.
What Roblox’s reported experiment figures mean
In its launch materials, Roblox also cited prior experiments involving in-experience text-chat notifications and timeouts: the company reported a 5% reduction in filtered chat messages and a 6% reduction in consequences from abuse reports. Those are Roblox-reported results from those experiments, not independent measurements of the new rephrasing feature’s accuracy or safety impact. Business Wire’s reproduction of Roblox’s announcement includes the figures.
