Reduce risk by checking the file’s status, author and contents; downloading only from trusted links; backing up saves; and treating unexpected executables or antivirus warnings seriously.
Is Nexus Mods safe?
Nexus Mods is operated by Black Tree Gaming Limited, a company registered in England and Wales, and hosts user-submitted game modifications and related media. Its About page reports more than 750,000 mods across more than 2,500 games; that is a self-reported, changeable platform figure.
Nexus says uploaded content goes through internal security checks and virus scanning. Files that fail checks can be quarantined for review, and the Files tab displays a status badge. Those safeguards make Nexus a more controlled source than an unverified mirror, but they are not a guarantee that every file is safe. A scan result does not establish that a mod is compatible with your game, free of bugs, or harmless in every future update. Nexus explains its process and the limits of scan results in its virus-scanning guidance.
The practical risk is usually tied to the individual download and what you do with it: user-submitted files, installers, scripts, bundled tools, compromised accounts, and misleading external links deserve scrutiny. Nexus’s File Submission Guidelines prohibit malware and adware, and restrict internet-connected executables unless network communication is crucial to the tool and explained. Rules and scanning reduce risk; they cannot replace your own checks.

What Nexus Mods’ security badges mean
Check the status beside the specific file you intend to download, not just the mod page as a whole. Nexus’s help page, last updated December 31, 2024, describes these indicators:

A red cross is not conclusive proof of malware: false positives can happen. It is, however, a reason to stop and investigate rather than proceed casually. Likewise, green means a file passed the stated checks; it is not a blanket certification of its behavior or future versions.
Check the mod page before downloading
Assess the author and history
- Look for a consistent history of uploads, updates, and useful replies. A new account is not proof of danger, but a new account posting an unexplained executable deserves more scrutiny than a long-established file with a history of use.
- Read recent comments and bug reports for repeated reports of redirects, unexplained password prompts, suspicious executables, or account issues.
- Check whether the instructions lead to Nexus or an external site. Treat an unexpected change to a third-party download host as a warning to verify the link.
- Use endorsements and download history as context, not proof. A popular file can be outdated, compromised in a later update, or incompatible with your game version.
Check the file and its purpose
- Confirm the file’s scan badge, upload or update date, version, size, and changelog. A surprising size or sudden change in contents calls for an explanation.
- Read the requirements, installation instructions, permissions, and credits. Make sure the file matches your game, edition, and version.
- Know what is inside the archive before installing it. Textures, audio, localization, configuration, and game-specific plugin files are generally less directly executable than installers or scripts, but no extension alone proves a file safe.
- Give extra scrutiny to
.exe,.msi,.dll,.bat,.cmd,.ps1,.vbs,.js, and.jarfiles, as well as launchers, patchers, loaders, injectors, and nested executables. These can be legitimate modding tools, but the author should explain what they do and why they are needed. - Do not follow instructions to disable antivirus, provide unrelated credentials, run unexplained commands, or use a password that is not documented by the author.
Community reports can help you spot patterns, but comments are not a technical inspection. Multiple independent antivirus detections, an unexplained executable added in a recent update, or an author who will not explain network behavior are reasons to avoid the file.

Download, inspect, and install with care
- Start at the official site. Navigate to Nexus Mods directly rather than using a search-ad redirect, shortened link, pop-up, or comment-posted mirror.
- Open the mod’s Files tab. Check the individual file’s status, version, requirements, author, changelog, and recent reports.
- Choose the appropriate download route. For supported files, use Mod Manager or Mod Manager Download to send the file to the official app. If those buttons are absent, the author may have disabled manager downloads or the file may not be supported by that workflow; the app’s download guide describes using Manual Download and importing a file from your drive.
- Scan before installation. Save a manual download to a known folder and scan the archive and extracted contents with your operating system’s security tools. A scan is evidence to consider, not a guarantee.
- Inspect before running anything. Do not launch an executable, script, DLL, or unknown launcher simply because it was inside a mod archive. Confirm what each file is meant to do and whether the instructions match its contents.
- Back up and install incrementally. Copy saves and configuration files somewhere separate, record your game version and mod list, and test one mod or a small group at a time. Keep the original archive until the installation works as expected.
- Test the game and retain a rollback route. Where a mod alters core files or uses an external tool, test with the mod disabled first when practical. Use a separate profile if your manager and game support it, and keep an unmodded baseline or know how to restore the original files.
Is Vortex safe?
Vortex is Nexus Mods’ official mod manager, available from its Nexus page. It automates downloading, organizing, deploying, enabling, and removing mods. That can reduce errors such as copying files into the wrong folder, but Vortex does not make a malicious mod harmless or certify every script, DLL, executable, or external tool. Download the manager from the official Nexus page or the Vortex project documentation.

- In Vortex, select the correct game and point it to that game’s top-level installation folder if automatic detection does not find it.
- Use separate profiles where the game supports them, and back up saves before experimenting.
- If you need to move Vortex’s download or staging folders, change their locations through Vortex’s settings rather than moving them externally; the documentation warns that outside moves can cause data loss.
Manual installation is not automatically safer. It lets you inspect an archive directly, which can help with custom instructions or unsupported files, but it also makes it easier to misplace files, overwrite originals, or miss a dependency. Choose the method that fits the game and file; neither changes whether the mod itself is trustworthy.
Are Nexus Collections safe?
Collections are curated lists and metadata that reference mods; they generally do not contain the mod files themselves. They may include external resources that direct you to other websites, and Collections are designed around Vortex. Nexus describes their structure in its Collections guidelines.

- Review the curator and read the Collection’s instructions.
- Inspect required and optional mods individually, including their scan status and file contents.
- Check each external resource’s domain and confirm it is expected before downloading.
- Back up saves before deploying a large setup; conflicts, load-order issues, and game-version incompatibilities can occur even when individual mods are legitimate.
The Nexus app’s Collection download guide says Premium users can use “Download all required mods,” while free users may need to visit mod pages and download files individually. That convenience difference does not change the need to assess each file.
What to do when antivirus flags a mod
Do not whitelist or run a flagged file just to see what happens. Nexus notes that unusual mod structures or behavior can trigger false positives, but a detection is still evidence that needs to be weighed against the file’s purpose and source.
- Record the security product, detection name, file name, and file hash if available.
- Check the Nexus badge and any VirusTotal information, then note whether the flagged item is an archive, executable, script, DLL, or other file.
- Compare the detection with what the mod claims to do. Look for corroborating detections from multiple engines, recent changes, and reports from independent users.
- Read the author’s explanation and recent comments. A long-used, unchanged file can still be falsely detected, but that history does not prove the detection is wrong.
- If the file is new, obscure, externally hosted, executable, or flagged by several engines, do not run it. Quarantine or delete it unless the concern is convincingly resolved.
- If uncertainty remains, contact the author or Nexus support rather than disabling protection.
Secure your Nexus Mods account
Use a unique password and a password manager; do not reuse the password you use for email, Steam, Discord, or other services. Nexus recommends a unique password and suggests at least 12 characters with a mix of character types in its password guidance. Do not enter your login details on a page reached through a suspicious redirect, and treat unsolicited “Nexus support” messages cautiously.

Enable two-factor authentication from your account settings under Security. Nexus’s 2FA guide describes pairing an authenticator app, entering a six-character code, and receiving five single-use, 16-character recovery keys. Store those keys securely and separately from the device used for authentication. If the exact button label differs, look for the two-factor-authentication setup in Security.
Nexus says mobile-number recovery has not been available since June 1, 2023. Its account recovery guidance notes that Premium or Supporter invoices may help establish ownership; download history or simply being signed into a mod manager is not sufficient proof.

If you only downloaded the file and did not open or run it, quarantine or delete it and run a full security scan. A download is not the same as executing its contents, though it is not a universal guarantee against every vulnerability. Keep your operating system and security software updated.

If you ran an installer, script, launcher, or other file and suspect compromise, removing the visible mod folder is not enough to address possible persistence or stolen credentials. Take these steps:
- Disconnect the computer from the internet if active compromise is suspected, and avoid signing into sensitive accounts on it.
- From a separate, clean device, change important passwords, revoke active sessions where possible, and enable two-factor authentication.
- Run an offline or boot-time scan using a trusted security product. Check for unfamiliar startup items, scheduled tasks, browser extensions, and new user accounts.
- If malware is confirmed or compromise remains likely, seek professional incident-response help or reinstall the operating system from trusted media.
Protect your game and saves, too
A mod can be legitimate and still break a game setup. Common problems include missing dependencies, incorrect load order, mod conflicts, crashes, reduced performance, overwritten files, and save corruption. Game updates can also make a previously working mod incompatible; cloud-save synchronization can carry a changed or damaged save between devices.

Final pre-download checklist
- You reached the mod through the official site or a verified author link.
- The file’s status, author history, version, requirements, and recent reports make sense.
- You understand every installer, script, DLL, launcher, and external link in the download.
- You have scanned the archive and will not bypass an unexplained warning.
- Your saves and configuration files are backed up, and you know how to disable or remove the mod.
- You have checked that the game’s rules allow the mod in the mode or server where you plan to use it.
